K750: MP3 ringtone quality sounds worse than media player

When I play an MP3 file in the media player it sounds really good. When I set the same file as my ringtone and someone calls my phone the sound quality is average. It is definitely not as good as when using the media player.

Why is this?

The volume is not too high so it is not distorting. Even on low volumes the ringtone MP3 sounds worse than the media player MP3.

Ok, so I'm not the only one with this problem. I did see that thread when I did a search, but I didn't find a solution or an answer anywhere.

No one knows why MP3 ringtones sound "crap". Does anybody know?

I think its to do with power preservation. eg. When a call comes in it uses a lot of power, so the quality of the mp3 is lowered. Thats what I've heard anyway.

Yeh, as you can tell from my other thread this really irritates me too , but doesn't look like there's any solution in sight. It's my number 1 want in the next firmware upgrade =/

Does it really sound that bad?

Yes, the media player quality sounds like CD quality. The ringtone quality sounds like tape quality....it's a big difference.

Even when the media player equaliser isn't on "megabass" or something similar, there's still a huge difference - ringtone is harsh and very trebly. As I said in my other thread, there are actually some files which I can't use as ringtones because, quite frankly (and at the risk of sounding very melodramatic), they hurt my ears. (But quite acceptable through media player)

Maybe the phone makes a copy off the choosen ringtone so it can start quicker when a incoming call comes.
So if you have a 192kbps MP3 it maybe makes it a 64kbps when it is chosed as a ringtone? And if you skip the EQ and makes it a 64kbps it will sound baaad..

I heard that the W800 plays ringtones in stereo. Has anybody converted their K750i to W800 because of this ringtone problem?

Can someone confirm that the ringtone plays like it is on media player on their converted k750i? Is it better sounding than the k750i with stock firmware? (without conversion in other words)

This would be a great help if we knew the anwser to this.

hmmm... i never noticed the degrading in mp3 quality during calls... but i must say its really loud which is good... i hear my phone ringing from my kitchen with my phone in my room..

Ringtones usually have more treble. Most of my dance ringtones have loads of treble no matter what pre-EQ I do before encoding to mp3. Whereas, other ringtones are very simple sounds and therfore you cannot tell the difference in sound quality.

Dance and rock ringtones don't play well on the k750.

I was thinking of converting to the w800 software but I need someone to confirm what I wrote in my previous post.

i got a power metal song for ringtone.. Nightwish- Stargazers

Very nice and loud...

Is your k750i converted to w800?

If not, whats the firmware version of your k750? I have Ozzy Osbourne - crazy train and the treble is just ear piecing even at low volume.
