DVB-H for Mobiles Phone with Automatic Zoom

20 March 2006 by axxxr
Siemens has developed a solution for mobile television viewing that automatically adjusts the picture to the size of displays found in small receiving devices and mobile phones.

DVB-H is a transmission technology for mobile terminals that uses DVB-T technology, the transmission standard for digital terrestrial reception. DVB-T is gradually replacing analog television reception in many countries. Until now, the small size of mobile phone displays have made it difficult for users to really enjoy terrestrial television broadcasts. For users trying to watch soccer games, for example, the ball would appear as a barely visible dot. That’s why the Siemens systems optimizes transmitted TV pictures for reception on mobile phones. The Siemens Communications developers have created an interface linking the transmitted signal and the terminal. Called Media Delivery Solution (MDS), the solution receives the soccer game broadcast, zooms in on the ball and sends the enlarged picture to the user’s terminal.

The technology will be put through its paces during the World Cup soccer games. Plans call for DVB-H to be used for test transmissions of games in many World Cup host cities. Full availability of the standard for consumer use is expected in 2008.

For mobile reception, a user needs a mobile phone or terminal with an integrated DVB-H chip set and a DVB-H antenna. This will provide reception of up to 30 channels and the option of taking part in an interactive program. A mobile radio connection serves as a feedback channel that enables viewers to participate in TV contests or opinion surveys by pushing the keypad buttons. Experts are forecasting strong demand for DVB-H, with up to 100 million mobile TV viewers expected for the Olympic Summer Games in Beijing in 2008.
