hey all
as the title says, can the k750 be used as a thumb drive (no drivers needed). i know this has been covered before, i ask this cuz my definition of thumb drive is theres no need for drivers. but when i plug in my k750 to my windows laptop, it asks for a bunch of drivers and when i just click cancel for installation nothing happens. so what i did was turned on the setting which lets it connect to windows update and let it install the drivers (i didnt use the included cd). after installing about 3-4 different drivers for it, it finally popped up as a drive. but i thought i dont need drivers??
(well at least on my mac, it doesnt need drivers, after plugging in the usb i can see it as a drive rite away. but the kernel panics on 10.4.1 dont help!)

hmm, that'd be a bitch if SE have NOT conformed to the usb storage standard. You are using Windows 2000 or XP right? (win98 needs drivers)

I have not experimented exclusively for this but I guess the drivers are not needed for storage card access but the other things like modem scripts etc. Remember that K750 does respond as a modem/virtual serial port etc too and those things need drivers.

But again, I might be wrong as I didn't test it as such.

yes but you should atleast get a drive in my computer. without drivers.

this post is also about k750 usb, and doesn't look hopeful either.

i understand that it installs drivers for modem, etc as well. i think that was the bulk of the drivers i was installing. however, shouldnt i be able to access the drive without having to install anything (or it auto installs for me)? this works fine for my mac (well, theres a known kernel panic problem rite now but will hopefully be resolved with the next mac update).

n yea.. i am using windows xp on my laptop!
i dont need this feature so much for use with my own computers at home. but itd be nice if i could use this feature to transfer stuff to a friends computer for example.

absolutely. It'd be a real pain. I've never had a problem in Windows XP (or 2000 for that matter) with ANY usb thumb drive (including my Nokia 5510, mp3 players, digital cameras, and thumb drives of various kinds).

Personally I don't think it's a windows problem but a K750 issue.

What kind of connection are you using? if its usb then the k750i does need SOME basic drivers..

But if you use blutooth to access these files (yes its damn slow most of the time) then you dont need any drivers, just to pair the 2 would help.

yes its thru usb..
i know itll require some basic drivers but windows xp should install it for me automatically upon connection (like a thumb drive).
i just remember someone say that the k750 doesnt need any drivers to be used as a thumb drive under windows.. but i havent been able to do that.
can someone else try this out. connect ur k750 to ur computer via usb and try to access it as a thumb drive.

thanks

yeh i tryed it on my home PC as i only have the pc suite installed on my laptop, and it used windows update service for the basic USB drivers then i just skiped the stupid un-needed web based ones, e.g. modem service

Hope you get yours working,

oh i have it working! hehe

that wasnt the problem.. i just want to be able to use it on OTHER computers without the need for drivers. like for example, if i want to transfer some files to a friends computer, i wouldnt want to install unnecessary drivers on thier computer. or at least be able to install it without an internet connection (or using the included cd.. i dont plan to carry that around with me! hehe)

Then if thats the case, then if possible i'd suggest bluetooth if the files are just pictures, but if its full .m4a (aac) music albums then bluetooth is way to slow for them, it takes too long for me..

P.S. can't you just use the memory pro-duo sticks that have the pics stored on and use the adaptor (thats not too big too carry round is it that may be easier) [addsig]

bluetooth isnt really a common feature on computers (other than macs) so thats kinda out of the question.

i want to use the k750 as a thumb drive for convenience since i always have my phone wit me. i have an actual thumb drive if i really wanted to use it. but like i said this is a convenience factor (well i guess i still have to carry the damn cable but still)
also, how come my mac doesnt need any drivers to see it as a removable drive and windows does!

thats because microsoft are a lot like vodafone (sounds stupid i know) but think about it they take the best products then slap some stupid branding and useless firmware all over them, thats why i stick to my Mini G4 Mac god i love it..

My advice to you then, BUY AN APPLE MAC, got it

>> otherwise hows the option of the card-reader may i just add?

i do use a mac haha..
but like i said my purpose was for use with other computers other than my own (n 95% of the world uses windows).
i was hoping i could get rid of my thumb drive all together but i guess not.

card reader idea is good. i have one also. but id rather drag around my thumb drive than a card reader.

oh well.. i hope at least others will find this thread usefull as reference.

thanks all who replied
