Thieves have begun to use bluetooth phones as a way of finding expensive laptops and cellphones in parked cars. Local police claim that 20 recent thefts have been carried out by crooks strolling around with bluetooth enabled phones to find expensive laptops. Police claim that there have been twenty bluetooth thefts.Although how they figured that out is beyond me.

If they dont know what it is (and I know plenty who don't) then surely the B/T wouldn't be switched on? B/T enabled laptops don't switch B/T on by themselves do they?

I don't know how these crooks go about doing this?...it could be just that they are robbing people who are in active use of their equipment or leave it unattended for while or something.Or simply Bluetooth may always be on on their machines without them being aware. [addsig]

I dont know. It could either be a case of people leave their laptops switched on for convenience and just turn off the screen to conserve battery power..

Or, the Bluetooth still gives out a signal if the laptop is on or not.

My XDA2 pda still gives out a Bluetooth signal if i leave Bluetooth off but turn the actual device off.

most mobiles and pdas come with the bt turned off and you have to manually switch it on. i'd imagine most laptops are the same. also when the device is off, so is the bt.

however, the real question is why are these people leaving their laptops switched on in a locked car? don't know about you guys but if i'm driving with my laptop, its switcheed off, in its bag and out of sight.

some people have it switched on just because they have it, even if they dont know what it is for.

Also, if it is switched on and you are set as hidden what happens for some devices (such as the iMate) is that when a phone scans, it actually does find the phone, but it sends a message back telling the phone not to show up. Of course this is not the case with all phones.
So you can see that some people may find a way around this.

I know that a lot of people switch their laptop 'off' by pressing the power button - many laptops go into standby when you do this.

If they are using a USB BT dongle for their pda / phone / mouse etc. then the dongle will remain on whilst the laptop is in standby. Most PCs turn on BT automatically when the BT dongle dongle is plugged in, which explains why they would have it enabled in the first place

I find this hard to believe......

E.G.
A would be thief is in a car park, blue-tooth on. He detects a PDA but there are 10 parked cars, what one has the PDA?

Is the report claiming he/she brakes into all 10 to find the device? I very much doubt it.

....Just a thought!
