The Z800i is now available in Australia!
Unfortunately, it's only available through 3, so expect it to be expensive...

They're $AU695, with an additional $AU595 payable to unlock them, if you want to use them on networks other than 3 Australia...
But then again, could you expect anything else from 3?

It used to be the other way around- a really expensive phone, but a really cheap unlocking fee...
3 Changed it, so that it was a cheap phone with a big unlocking fee, to attract people to, and keep them on their network; most people who join 3 Australia port out to other networks really quickly, so its essential for 3 to keep them however possible!

Is unlocking a phone expensive? Then i wonder how much a firmware upgrade is....

Unlocking, as I specified above, is $AU595.
A firmware upgrade is free if your phone is under warranty, and only a small fee if it's outside of warranty...

but you need to go to a service centre for the firmware because providers generally don't do it.
the 3 unlocking fee is (almost) immaterial anyway since there's no other 3g provider at the moment, and the call/text rates are pretty good anyway. still, bring on the competition i say.

Like the Z1010, the Z800 is "dual mode" compatible, meaning that it is 100% compatible with both GSM and WCDMA networks...
ALL of the features on the Z800, except for the obvious (the video-calls), will work fine with a GSM network!
Why join 3, when you can get $230 worth of calls, text messages, multimedia messages and data on Vodafone's $49 Maxi Cap (besides, the Z1010 and Z800 are both fully "vodafone live!" compatible)?

'cos the 3 $99 cap is cheaper (if you're willing to make the 24 month commitment)

Come September there will be more 3g phones available when Vodafone launches it in Australia.
