02 Pay as you go GPRS |

This has been discussed alot recently while I've been lurking around here, but as time changes so do technology, so what I want to know is does the gprs free proxy thing still work?
I've heard mixed things from the posts, from it does work to it only works on contract etc. Some people still seem to have it and I just wondered how it worked?
I also wondered what exactly the proxy was, because if o2 have started charging then surely it should effect this too. Hopefully someone can explain it for me, I've been wondering for ages.
Also I am willing to pay for my gprs if I can get it unlimited, but I don't seem to be able to find that anywhere either.
Thanks for any help guys |

Yep I'm on PAYG, but I'm wondering if it does work. I know that "officially" it doesn't, but that doesn't mean to say that you can't use it does it.

im on payg and i still free gprs through the proxy, even though ive heard people on here say that its been stopped.
the only thing i can say is that over the past month or so its been going a bit funny esp. with downloads, it just refuses to let me download anything at times. |

I still get it free using proxy 193.113.200.195 port 8080. I have no credit on that particular SIM card and sometimes it pops up a message on the phone saying "You have run out of credit, please top up and try again" but my laptop still connects and pages view fine.
There is some sort of restriction on downloads, anything over about 1.5Mb gets terminated by the proxy and can't be resumed for some reason. But for web pages it's fine.
I have finally managed to get MSN Messenger working through the proxy too, using Adium which is an instant messenger for OS X.

@Nature: Great, you still get it free, that's good news. I don't mind it being a bit unstable as long as it works, I think there is a way around the mb download limit that's mentioned on the boards somewhere here.
@Jonat8: Thanks for your reply too, great to here you can still get it. I'll try the settings you suggested when I can get my blasted usb cable to work. The fact that it doesn't work directly from the phone but does from the laptop is wierd and I wonder why this happens, but I'm not compaining, I want it for laptop use anyway. Glad you got MSN to work, when I get around to using it I'll try the program you suggested, thanks.
@ten18: So MSN can work then, not bad, I'll try it out, thanks.

I sort of found out about the download limit by trial and error, after 3 times trying to download the same file and it terminating at the same point every time I figured it must be to do with the proxy.
The problem is, when the download gets to 1.5Mb (ish) the proxy simply terminates it but does it in such a way that the browser thinks the download is complete. So IE flashes up "Download Complete" and you're left with a truncated file. Depending on the file type it'll probably be unusable. If the proxy terminated the download so that it appeared to have failed, then you could probably resume it. But no, it has to be a pain in the neck. |

@ten18: I also got MSN to work without the proxy server as well. I tried changing status a few times and it seemed to work OK so I wonder why that works but nothing else works without the proxy server. If I turn it off in OSX preferences then I cannot get to any web pages (at all).
The proxy is only an HTTP proxy but it is good for HTTP or HTTPS traffic on any port, but no other type of traffic (FTP etc.) Apart from the download restriction the only other problem with it is that it doesn't seem to support cookies, so no signing into web based e-mail, forums etc. If you have a cookie saved on your computer for say, a forum login, then the forum should recognise it until it expires though.

with the p8s internal browser it just knocks off, no warning or nothing, it does seem to be about the 1mb limit but when its in a real bad mood it does it whenever it feels like it.
at the beginning i dont mind, its when its towards the end it winds me up.
its like back in the day when the original napster was running and these idiots waited until 99% of the download was done then decided to cancel it!

That's a thread and in it there are details of how to get past the dl limit, written by rick87: Quote:
| there sure is!would have taken me ages to shift the amount of data i've shifted over my phone otherwise. head over to www.speedbit.com and download DAP(Download Accelerator Plus) awesome piece of software, with the added bonus of not only can you download greater than 1.5mb, but it also accelerates it - i have had speeds of 7-8k on my gprs connection with it. however, bear in mind that not all downloads are compatible with it, due to the scripts some sites use to download the files. a way around this usually is if you can find the file address the script points you to and put the URL directly into DAP, it will download it quite happily. good luck! |

@Rhino8: Are you after info on how to connect or how to get it free? I'm still struggling on the connection part myself but I'm sure someone round here knows how to do it. If you're stuck on the "free" part, then all I can say is try the settings mentioned above, keep troubleshooting and good luck.
