There's an insightful interview with laffen near the end of the thread 'On the couch with Scotsboyuk' that answers some of your questions.

@scottyd

I'll quote Laffen from the interview mentioned above:

What is your favourite Esato moment?

laffen says:
When I found out that I could make a living of running this web site.

Esato is the hobby that turned in to something more.

Well it is interesting to know how Laffen "is making a living off this website" come on you dont see that much advertising that could possibly represent a huge income! Come on Laffen spit it out...

some of the donators donate montly a small amount of money. if alot of people would do that, then laffen would earn enough to stay alive.
but running this website takes alot of time, effort and money.
most people don't even know half of whats going on behind the screens to keep this site up and running every day.

there is indeed very little advertising, laffen doesn't like a site full of ads, nore does anyone else.

i think its best that we don't ask our selfs how much money he makes, its for the best that we keep donating so that he can provide us with hours of fun here

Wish the guy himself would show up here to answer some questions in person :). He's obviously digesting all this behind the scenes with amusement written all over his face.

He onl accepted donations at a time when Esato was going to be shut down.

i just dont get how he has managed to make a living out of something that he could not afford to run before, i am so intrested simply because esato is sorta like a family website and the runner has so much involvement it is unique feeling compared to other website and that why i wish we were told some stuff.

also i think he should make a premium service for a bit of money each year you get extra stuff and free downloads etc i would sign up to that
