ARINC and Telenor say that they will soon market new technology to allow airline passengers to use personal mobile phones aboard commercial flights, according to Cellular News.

"The new technology allows safe and seamless usage of todays popular GSM mobile phones on any commercial aircraft flight.

Passengers will be able to make and receive mobile phone calls, and send or receive text messages just as they do on the ground."

@masseur - Maybe you can shed some light here re: this thread mate, 'cause you're a pilot yourself - right ! Will it also apply to two-seater planes or in the likes of a Cessna or will only make some complications with commercial passenger planes

It is widely accepted that Using a cell phone on a plane interferes with the navigation and communications systems of the aircraft.Well here's the facts.

"I've never experienced a navigational problem that could be traced to a cell phone," says one veteran pilot who didn't want his identity revealed. "From everything I've read, cell phones and most avionics shouldn't conflict."

So why do flight attendants make you put away your gear before takeoffs and landings? "That's more for making sure [we] have people's attention and for [individual] safety," he says. "If I have to hit the brakes and abort a takeoff, I don't want a laptop flying across the cabin."

The Federal Aviation Administration, which regulates cell phone use in a plane, has a different view: "The concern is that cell phones would conflict with onboard avionics," says Paul Takemoto, the FAA's electronics guru.

Is there scientific proof that cell phones can make planes go haywire? Some. In 2003 the Civil Aviation Authority--the FAA of the United Kingdom--ran tests using simulated cell phone signals in a chamber (not in an actual aircraft) and found problems. In some cases, the compass froze, some instruments displayed errors, and audio communications were difficult to hear due to interference.

Until additional tests prove otherwise, Takemoto says, the FAA prefers to err on the side of caution.

Quite right, it isn't exactly a major inconvenience to be without one's mobile for a few hours. If there is a real need to phone someone then one could always use a satellite phone provided by the plane, most planes on long haul journeys have them.

Yes and for anyone who insists on making a call on their mobile, its only fair that they walk outside to do so, to avoid inconveniencing the other passengers. [addsig]

Yes i agree on those points....But rules stand as they are on flights that mobiles have to be switched off!..So we all need to respect those rules. [addsig]
