Getting just a SIM card? |

If I purchase any of the several unlocked quad-band GSM phones available and want to use it mostly in the US but occasionally in other countries, can I just go to any of the US GSM carriers (AT&T, Cingular, T-Mobile -- are there others?) and purchase JUST a SIM card? Will they sell me one? Will they be suspicious that I already have a phone and don't need one? I didn't see any such options on their site. All I see is about purchasing a phone.
If I do this and then I go overseas, I assume I can either keep in the US SIM card (and pay the corresponding rates) OR purchase a local SIM card, right?

From what I understand this is correct, but I am not sure. Call them and ask...
Naturally they would like to sell you a contract, but without a contract they certainly won't sell you a (discounted) phone.

You will need to start new service and go through credit check.

Or instead could I get prepaid SIM cards from any of the US GSM carriers? Can't you get those pretty much anywhere (convenience stores, etc.)? |

pre-paid recharge cards can be bought anyware, but the sim still has to come from the provider. ask your local providers about either pre-pay or PAYG options. also check their websites.
