i've noticed twice in the past hour where three new topics were posted with the identical title by the same poster. i don't know if this is a server or user fault but it led me to think of the following:

is it possible to develop a protocol whereby if anyone makes a new topic with an identical name to an existing topic, they are prompted to either change the name or abandon the thread? there could also be links provided to the pre-existing topic so the new poster could see what had been raised previously, and adjust their new thread accordingly. over time the protocol could be developed to pull up threads with a similar title based on a certain percentage of identical words or something similar.

since i'm not a computer person i don't know how hard or easy such a thing would be to implement, but it would at least help cut down on spates of "Help please" threads.

I'm afraid it is user related.
The problem is that some members are uncertain of wich forum to post their query so they post it in two or three forums to make sure at least one of them is in the right one.
Your ide is a good thought but by doing a similarity script it will make it much harder for us, the moderators, to pick up two identical topics when we look through the forum.
