Complete mobile phone access may come within two to four years.

The British Civil Aviation Authority has decided that passenger planes under their jurisdiction will allow their passengers to use mobile phones and other portable devices. Despite the warnings and information we have been fed in the past, these devices do not interfere with electronic circuits or radio systems used planes as long as they are in "safe mode".

The CAA says airlines should let travelers write messages, read documents and perform all other non-phone functions on phones that double up as computers, just as they can now work on a laptop, play on a GameBoy or listen to music on an iPod at cruising altitudes.

Wow that is just great news. I think the flight will be so much more to do and not so boring when i can use my phone.

thats a coincidence, after discussions in the " Flight Mode not accepted in some aircraft" thread a couple of months ago I wrote to BA customer services regarding flight mode on various phones such as the P900 and how I get told to turn it off while I and other people can happily use devices with bluetooth and wifi blaring away.

I got the issue escalated to the highest level senior safety officer who finally wrote back to me yesterday saying that while he agrees with me it will remain BA policy to disallow any mobile phone use on board since it will be hard for cabin crew to manage and would require too much training.

I'll post that letter in the other thread tomorrow but I wonder how their view will change based on what has been said by the CAA

While there is no consensus, it will pretty much be an airlines discretion to (dis)allow its passengers to use phones in safe mode.
