Does anyone think that there is a mobile phone available that has a camera capable of competing with a digital camera with regards to image quality?

No

The small sensors mean noisier images and the cheap lenses don't do too much good either.

I'm stunned by the C905's image quality to be honest, the Xenon is pretty powerful and the images contain a wonderful amount of detail for a phone

Yes there is, i-mobile 902, 5 MP CCD camera phone from Thailand! There are also other numerous CCD camera phones from Korea & Japan, you can check them out in this thread I made long time ago...

You can check some photos taken by i-mobile 902 here:

If you're asking about CMOS camera phones, then there are only two phones that can come close to real cameras, Motorola ZN5 and Samsung I850i, but these phones still cannot match real digital cameras, due to the size of their sensors...

Hope I helped!

Maybe or perhaps . . . it can, I mean a 5 MegaPixel Cameraphone CAN match that of a 3 MegaPixel Digital Camera . . . or an 8 MegaPixel Cameraphone is at PAR with that of a 5 MegaPixel Digital Camera . . .

I also think we are not going to see much in the way of optical zooms in future camera phones cos it just makes phones far too big. Though i wonder if SonyEricsson will ever attempt to put an optical zoom in one of their future CyberShot phones? Digital zoom is a waste of time i never use it. The tiny lenses in mobiles cannot perform like a proper big zoom lens its just not possible

samsung INNOV8 gets pretty close in daylight only. So yeah not really yet. Although the 8 megapixel gang do a pretty good job nonetheless.
