OK, confession time. I just bought a Nokia N95! |

I must stop buying phones, it's bankrupting me! Especially when it's Nokias some may argue! Just bought a Nokia N95 at what I think is a pretty good price - seller has a good feedback so I don't think I've been scammed or bought one of those far eastern 'Fakes'.
I know these are hadly breaking news now, I do tend to be half to a generation behind the cutting edge (I refuse to pay the inflated prices when a phone/item is first released) but I've fancied one of these for a while now. Paid £200 for an unlocked one off Ebay, though it was originally on Vodafone so the menus have probably been ruined with their firmware!
Couple of questions first - do Vodafone put their crappy firmware and menus on these phones, and if so, are any functions limited/removed by this? I know they can be debranded, though I'm a bit edgy about doing it on a phone that cost me 200 quid rather than a tatty K750i I pay 25 quid or something for!
I am also wondering about selling my K800i and keeping this as my main phone - would I be making a mistake if I did that? I know there are issues around battery life and early firmwares were buggy.
I'm starting to think I have a problem though - I keep buying things like this without really being able to afford it, I think it's called 'emotional buying' or something like that - but that's another thread, one I might start later to get people's thoughts!

ummm vodafone disable VoIP and 'cripple' the phone with their firmware and i would definately advise a debrand.....although w.e u do dont tamper with the slide
anyway id keep your k800i for a few months first as i was reluctant to sell mine then when i did and got a k810i on upgrade my n95 is being considered for ebay

I'll look into debranding it - where would i get the necessary files, and can it be done using the standard data cable?
Will keep the K800i, though my finances might dictate otherwise!

debranding doesn't require anything more than downloading nemesis service suite (NSS) and running it to change the product code to a generic one... I'll dig out my thread on this topic if you can wait a short time... hang on... here it is
then once the product code is changed simply run the standard Nokia update service to update with the latest generic firmware
this means its all free btw

Am just downloading that Nemesis programme, will probably debrand the phone once I get it, though worried about bricking it with that programme, though I imagine it's pretty idiot-proof (but is it sammyboy proof? )

I nearly managed to break that barrier! I've seen some on Ebay in the completed items that people had put BINs on down to £150, but I bet they don't hang around very long!
After reading through that link that Masseur provided and downloading Nemesis, I'm glad that debranding is comparitively easy, and think I'll be confident enough to do it as long as I don't stuff up changing that product code thing! Another silly question btw - would debranding the phone or changing it's code re-lock the phone to Voda?
When the missus sees this I think I'll have to tell a few porkies about the price I paid to stop her having a fit, though I really must reign in my spending as I'm going to get myself into trouble. I need to sort myself out, and stop buying expensive phones and gadgets to compensate for my mood and what's wrong in my life

I really must stop before I get myself seriously into debt, got a bit on my credit card and must nip it in the bud now before it gets serious. Also sort myself out so I'm not trying to cheer myself up by buying expensinve things!
Though the N95 was 2/3 paid for from stuff I'd just sold.

@samboy - Congrats ! I think you can call it - IMPULSIVE BUYING rathen than an EMOTIONAL one I stopped changing fones for about some months now . . . I know I really have to start . . somewhere, somehow I've been addicted in chnaging fones since 2003 (joined Esato . . . in a way this site has contributed to my negative-hobby).
Try to give some time on your N95, never ever sell your K800i just in case you'll be fed-up with the Nokia fone you've just acquired.
Good Luck mate!
