My miserable W810 experience tells me that the "converged" device is still a pipe dream off in the future. So I'm buying an iPod - if you don't like it, get lost. I also need a phone that works well as a phone and does not pretend to have multimedia capabilities.

For Apple iSync use, my choices are limited to Motorola, Nokia, and . And here in the US, I can't make use of a 3G device, nor anything lacking the 850 and 1900 MHz bands. Finally, Motorola is garbage, so cross them off the list.

That doesn't leave much, except the Nokia E50 and K550i. Both are quad-band, EDGE, and iSync-compatible (with a little work). Both are current devices, not discontinued. Both are ~ $250 USD from reliable non-eBay sources. Which to choose?

Obviously the E50 wins for its Symbian OS, which in part means much better PDA functionality, as well as its 320x240 display. But the K550 is the newer phone with the better camera. Plus, I have a bunch of accessories from my W810 that would fit the K550 but obviously not the E50. Finally, I haven't had a Nokia in almost 10 years, while I've had 4 phones. Better the devil you know, maybe?

Anyway, I have no idea which way to go on this. I especially could use feedback from Nokia S60 device users Not to mention suggestions for any other devices I should consider.

To be honest, I dont like the K550, its pics are inferior to K750 and the phone it self looks cheaply made. I think you'll like the E50 because of its perfect construction, better display, better HTML browser and better looks.

Although i am using a w810in and i watch tv and listen to java radio i would suggest getting the e50 since this device will let you open mini opera as oppose to other nokia phones that wont open applications. The k550i has poor resolution and no Edge !

...eh? I've used operamini on 6680, n70, n73, n91, e61...and I KNOW it works on non-symbian nokias...??? You must have experience with operator-branded models that don't allow such apps?!
Apart from that you're right: e50 is a great phone! If the non-fancy look doesn't turn you off, it's the one to get! Before I got my e61 I tried one for 3 days (incl. Operamini ), and I loved it - just my eyesight said: e61 I'd almost say they should make it more expensive, so that people believe just how great it is (also great 3rd party apps etc etc!!!)
Enjoy!

OK, next question: E50 + iPod, E65 + iPod, N95, or N73?

The E65 costs almost twice as much as the E50, but it has Wi-Fi, a better display (16M colors instead of 256K), and some other higher specs. Not to mention the neat slider design.

I'd love an N95 (especially if the prices keep dropping), but I hear praise and criticism for it in equal measure. An N73 Music Edition would work also... How well do these handle music and videos? I don't suppose either of these integrate well with iTunes?

Lastly, any pitfalls in owning a Symbian device versus a "dumb"phone?

Sadly, I can't use any of these devices' 3G, unless I travel overseas, since Cingular runs its 3G on 850/1900 MHz. I'd feel like I bought an F1 car, but did all of my driving in school zones But at least all of the above are Quad-band + EDGE.

... i currently own n91 and e61 - both s60 3rd ed. and I haven't had any probs! Have to add however, that voda-ireland released them months after uk etc... So they had more time to troubleshoot, I suppose?! Both are way faster than my wife's non-smart w810 (and even the e61 sounds better!) and the w850 I tried a few weeks ago! i think some of the nagging re. N95 has to be taken with a pinch of salt - a smart-phone will only ever be as smart as the user (ooops )... No, I mean with the hype surrounding it I bet many inexperienced users bought one thinking it's as simple as kxxx etc etc... i know also that a lot of the rumours re s60 3rd are still around and being repeated although those were prerelease issues...
i'm not saying s60 3rd models are all perfect, but much of the criticism is obsolete!

Wow, no love for the K550i? My wife has one and it's quite nice!

  • small size
  • good weight
  • nice display and UI
  • great reception and voice quality
  • plenty of features
  • decent camera (it's a 2MP phone camera, what do you expect?)

The build quality is hardly "cheap" - the white one at least, looks brilliant, almost luxurious even, with its semi-matte finish and chrome accents. And it even has a (chrome) camera lens cover, which is more than I can say about any phone after the W800...

The only things I don't like are (1) the painful # buttons (2) the side-mounted FastPort and (3) the latches holding the battery cover look flimsy (they're small and plastic).

Maybe Esato members forget it's a midrange "dumb"phone and have set their expectations too high?

... Which is why the E50 or the other S60 phones I mentioned will probably be better for me. I've reached a point where I need a bit more "smart"phone functionality. And none of the UIQ devices are USA- or Mac-compatible

OTOH, I'm not yet convinced that "convergence" is here, hence my interest in a Nokia "E" series phone + iPod vs. an "N" series phone.

@ Hlcn Twst,
well argued! but ( ) : have you listened to e50/61???? You don't need an ipod! Some nice earphones will do - for luxury pay 20 dollars for lcg jukebox (great musicplayer with lyrics search, cover art, internet radio, light-speed playlist management etc etc...), and you're all set!!!

All the points you mentioned for K550, E50 already has all those so K550 can hardly be called the better buy, unless you're too used to the SE UI.

@QVGA - No doubt, the E50 is the better buy. But that doesn't mean the K550i deserves the scorn heard in this thread - an fans' thread no less

Do the Nokia phones have the iPod's balanced sound output?

Do the Nokia phones synchronize playlists with iTunes?

Using a non-iPod (e.g. mobile phone) in iTunes is a pain. You have to manually copy the desired music from the computer to the phone, then manually create your playlists on the phone.

Nokia does have an iTunes plug-in for the N91, and it's rumored to work for the N95. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

if you want a definite iPOD like sound quality then N91 is either equal or better than iPOD.
