I bought a Sony 512mb M2 card off ebay, i checked with the seller first and he confirmed it was genuine.
It arrived but when i put it in my phone, even after reformatting it, it is only showing 455mb as available.
I contacted the seller about this and he said it was down to "they don't have the full capacity as specified, they have archives and there own floder"
Is this right? it struck me as strange that a 512mb card would be missing such a large percentage of its memory (about 10%) as standard? |

It's farly normal I'm afraid, I recently bought a couple of 1Gb Sandisk Ultra-II mem sticks, and with nothing on them it stated there was 969Mb free, so some is taken up with system files etc.

there must be free space for the card sw and next to it, backup is stored twice on every card, so that takes space too
