........................................................ whether we LIKE it or DON'T, the very DAY will COME that almost ALL handsets will have this 3G-feature on it ! Prepare for owning a 3G handset (in the FUTURE) then . . . .

I might go for a 3g handset..... Even though its only the initial stage of 3g implementation here in india... But i guess, i won't be using 3g that much in the forseeable future..

3G reception is kinda flakey where I live. So long as I'm in the city I'm ok with the services. But if I'm out and about around my locality, then it's GSM most of the time. If 3G services were a bit more affordable then I'd subscribe to the TV thing with vodafone. I do use the 50 free minutes of video calling I get every month. but most of the time we switch the cameras off and just use it to speak.
I figure that the networks need to find out what T-mobile are doing to be able to provide such excellent data deals and come up with their own answers to it. I use a k800i on WnW as a modem for my laptop. It'd be much better for myself and I'm sure other customers; if vodafone had more affordable data solutions. |

I think whether u need 3G/UMTS or not is depend to your needs and the situation near you. I mean, if you don't need wireless big bandwith for fast internet connection, than you don't need 3G/UMTS. if you are a heavy user internet and got lucky to have a hot-spot area for Wifi with a big bandwith, and you have a Wifi enabled device, than you don't need 3G/UMTS.
but if you want to have fast internet, don't have a near hotspot wifi area, and don't have a wifi device, and especially you are a mobile person, i think 3G/UMTS is a must. the speed is much much better and faster than the speed of dialup with 56K phone modem or normal GPRS (2G). |

Good point, Ryolasta!
I only add that if you sometimes want to make a videocall then you must have 3G phone. But if you are regular mobile phone user and you don't need high speed data transfer, it's better to switch 3G off from your phone to save the battery life.
PS. If you travel to Japan and/or South Korea you also need a 3G phone, because there is no good old GSM. |

@aatuif
3.5G which is already with us hence HSPDA and will be followed by the very unoriginal 4G etc etc.
@occupied
Although WiMax was being hailed as the next big thing now that HSPDA is starting to offer such high download speeds and these Networks are already in place. I no longer see WiMax as this great threat to mobile Networks but only time will tell.

dunno is it me or my netwk sux but i found that hsdpa runs on edge speed (about 80kbps or so. i'm on a 3g net which implements hsdpa).
besides wimax wouldn't cost telecom providers as much as gsm/umts/hsdpa. in the amount of bts they have to build at least |

I use 3G with my laptop on occasion (3-4 times per month) for mobile web browsing. Usually have no problem getting 3G and on UK Orange you can have unlimited usage for one day for £1 (PAYG) which is much cheaper than a WiFi bundle or hotel WiFi cost. Great when away on business. |

I have 3G service plan but I seldom use 3G service, mainly due to battery life problem. I have used video call for about a minute so far just for testing. Only one if my friends had 3G service, now he has switched to 2G, with whom I had tested. Actually this service plan is waste of money.
For the handset, I sometimes need roaming in Japan and Korea and 3G handset eliminates need of hiring compatible handset, usually with new number. |

I would advise you to be careful as you may find that that £1 day rate excludes using your phone as modem and only covers browsing on the phone. It may even exclude IM and VOIP as well as steaming services also.
