More than 1 million people a week are becoming new mobile phone users in India.

According to the Cellular Operators’ Association of India the number of mobile users in India has topped 110m.

It could be expected considering India's population which is well over a billion people.

In South Africa we've got approximately 23 million cellphone subscribers and a population of aboout 46 million people.

We have 23 mill + 15 mill + 2 mill and the New entry Virgin Mobile...

= 40 million subscribers out 55 million population...

@786KBR: That 55 million can be disputed...I doubt we have so many people in South Africa.

All I know is that a lot of people in South Africa own cellphones.

But only 20% of mobile users have knowledge about latest technology in cell phones like gprs/3g/wifi/edge etc etc... thats why india lacks many wifi hot spots / 3g network etc etc..!!

Thats great and not strange for India because of big population. In Serbia we have mobile penetration of 70% , or 5.5mil users. It is a good percentage, but not as good as EU average of 90%.
