Bit strange this:

1. Editing the navigational shortcuts resets itself if I switch the phone off.

2. Phone is French (i think) with R5AF001 (FR_1) firmware (CDA 102419/4). SEUS wont find an update for it.
When I try the OTA service, it says "Update service configuration error, keeping old software."
Clicking "software version" under that menu brings up a load of garbled characters.

3. Phone doesn't seem to charge through USB

4. Battery life seems to go up and down like a yoyo!

Any ideas on what I can do to fix these?

that shortcut bugs seems a general bug in sE fones, do noticed in other models aswell. according the usb charging, imo its better if its not working, actually the chargers are to load up the batt. do te search and try to find out, if u have the lazest fw or not, might be an upgarde will solve the problems. but i would take it back to the shop an let it check by experts, might be, its hw bug.

Well charging on my W800 was perfect, and MUCH more convenient than having to dig out a mains charger that I don't have a free socket for.
I did notice that the USB cable I got with my W900 has considerably less pins than the W800 one (although I tried the 800 one with my 900 with the same results)
Same with the shortcuts. They were fine on my W800...

It would seem there have been plenty of FW updates for the W900 (seems R5BB is current compared to my R5AF) yet my W900 refuses the existence (which makes me wonder if that has something to do with the OTA service saying it's broken also)

Can't take it back to a shop as I got the phone off a colleague at work, who traded it with some guy on this forum!

That's under
Menu->Settings->General->Update service

When I do "Search for update" I get

and when I do "Software Version" I get
