I have never ever formatted a memory stick.

In my experience the memory sticks come formatted and the folders needed get created if they don't already exist when you put it into a new device

Of course another way of doing it is using a PC and deleting the previous folders (from another device say) and then putting it in the new device, which usually creates the folders.

From the Memory Stick FAQ
Quote:

Q11. How can I format (initialize) Memory Stick media?
A11. All Memory Stick media are pre-formatted for optimal performance before leaving the factory. You can use your newly purchased Memory Stick media immediately.

So i guess, brand new msticks need not be formatted..but then since it is blank, there's no harm..
