Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications intends to aggressively expand its sales networks and take other steps to boost sales in Europe and emerging markets, according to President Hideki Komiyama, The Nikkei reported Monday.
"It's a pressing matter to bolster our operations in the main European market as well as the emerging markets, which are growing," said the head of the major U.K.-based cellular phone manufacturer.
The global cell phone market continues to expand, but Sony Ericsson's earnings growth has slowed considerably. The firm aims to revamp its global strategy by clearly identifying which regions to focus on.
Sony Ericsson ranked fourth in the global cell phone market last year, but its area of strength, high-end handsets, took a hit from the European economic slowdown.
In addition, the company has been struggling in India in part "because of Nokia Corp., which entered the market earlier," Komiyama said. His firm set up production and development sites there last year.
Sony Ericsson is now establishing sales firms and extending its reach in such emerging markets as India, and aims to make a comeback in the U.S. and Europe by launching a premium brand. In other regions, it plans to become more selective in receiving orders based on profitability.
Although the Japanese market accounts for less than 5% of Sony Ericsson's worldwide sales, major Japanese cell phone service company NTT DoCoMo had demanded handsets with highly advanced technologies, putting a heavy burden on the manufacturer.
"We will stop developing products that are to be released next year" by DoCoMo in Japan, Komiyama said.

I don't see SE abandoning the high end, but if they want to get beyond fourth place then they have to focus more on the low and mid range phones than they have done. Low-end phones is what the Sagem tie-up was about, but making phones as cheap as Nokia can isn't going to be easy. They're very good at itAt the same time, Nokia seems to be very good at stamping out clone mid range phones with a different case and like it not it means that I walk into a shop and see half a catalogue of nokia phones, one of them has to look right to me.As for the high end, well, now the the fruit company is here, the days of anouncing a phone and turning it out at some point in the future are gone. HTC and SE both seem to be reducing the time between announcement and release, I can't blame them for that, it just means we get less news in the meantime while three months of announcement slack is taken up. I've every faith that we're going to see exciting and hopefully solid high end phones, but some more focus lower down the range was inevitable. |

It's known fact that in the far east they get ALL the latest development way before Europe and the US. It's where all the new tech is launched and tested. They test it there first to see if it works and sells. But to read that a statement that SE is abandoning the high end market, well I don't think they've just launched the Xperia brand to go and ditch it next year along with the P series.
I read it as the new developing tech will be slowed such as 4G and it's services which we in the UK at least probably won't get for ages, we still have patchy 3G coverage!
So to say SE are abandoning the high end market is simply just daft. I sudgest you re-read the post.

DoCoMo has changed what they want. Last bold sentence has only a meaning for se.co.jp. |

SE will be making high end phones no doubt about it, mid and low brings in cash. High end phones are expensive to produce and will sell less due to their price, SE can't just do these phones or it would go bust. Think of SE as Audi, they sell lots of A3 and A4 cars etc for a good backing so that they can make a few RS and R8 models. Without low and mid end backing, there would be no high end phones for SE.
I have family working at Nokia. These companies are seriously rich, they own loads of other companies, have contracts here and there and will always be rich. Right now at Nokia, they are testing with some really expensive material and doing research that requires huge amounts of money.
A dip for SE is nothing, its not like the Post Office having to cut jobs. Their aim is to have something in every market segment so you will see high end phones and when they are released you will see that a lot of money, time and effort went into the phones.
After the announcement, this thread will go ape like it always does. |

It sounds to me like a disproportionately large chunk of the R&D goes on handsets for NTTDocomo. Strange then how it didn't mention AU Win handsets which also can be quite high-end.

I think it means shorter time to market. Correct me if I'm wrong.

It clear that SE have difficutries producing Higer end devices, and will NOT producing JAPANEESE phone again due to unability to follow advancement of Japaneese standart.
Se is a trully KING of MID-LOW END Phones

It's difficult to interpret what this means.
I don't think SE decision about Japan is very important, they probably realized that they were unable to meet some of the requirements within a specific time given their capabilities.
What bothers me is that it is not clear what SE's strategy is where hi-tech smartphones are concerned. If the Xperia line is their answer to creating a brand, than I don't see how they can keep their old customers.
There's obviously a good deal of restructuring and re planning going on at SE, let's see what shows when the dust settles down.
Personally, I only look at SE for high end smartphones, I'm not interested in the low-middle ranges.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD |
