Well I have the K700 on Orange and although the customisations are annoying, it still does everything the K700 should do, and as such is a great little phone.

Orange need to remove the desktop icons to allow customised shortcuts (or at least only allow left/right customisations).
And since they're introducing these "extra" icons on other phones (eg. Samsung E800) it doesn't look too hopeful.

[Orange icons are much better on the E800, they don't ruin the phone!]

So although I've sent my complaints to Orange, I'd still recommend the phone as one of the best you can get on their network.

Or just fork out £300 for a sim-free phone!

Sorry, I can't agree that the Orange branded SE K700i does everything it should.

The shortcut menus are gone, the ability to post notes on the screen is gone, the ease with which you can turn on bluetooth and IR is gone. And the actual software is so buggy it's unbelievable - you have to turn the phone off and on again most of the time to get a java game to start, and when locking the keys you take a gamble that you'll be able to unlock them again without once more having to turn the phone off.

So no, don't get an Orange branded SE K700i. I did, and I am going to regret it every day that I have to use it.

I am another of the many SE K700i Orange user that has seen this great phone turned in pile of poo. But there is hope for us yet. I just finished speaking SE here in the UK and was told that they have been overwhelmed by complaints regarding the phones customisation!!! – So much so that they are collecting details of users that having problems with their K700i, in particular if they have had little or no help from their SP customer services.

Apparently, some SPs are even blaming SE and have even recommended users to change their phone for a Motorola!!! Therefore, SE could be taken legal action against SPs to protect their brand name.

So, the more of us that can contact SE to complain about this issue the better. Let hope that the days SE phones being ruined by Orange, Vodaphone and O2 will soon be over!

The latest reply from Orange following their unsatisfactory reply posted on page 6 was:

Thank you for your mail.

I am sorry to hear you are not happy with our previous response to your query. I am unable to advise the reason for this business decision as to why this feature is not available on Oranges handsets.

Kind regards

Suzanne

Bah! Stoopid people.

Dear Jody

Thank you for your mail regarding your phone menu.

I am sorry to inform you that orange do not support the short cut menu on your Sony Ericsson K700i. The information provided on page 106 of your manual is unfortunately a misprint.

Please accept our apologies if this has caused you inconvenience.

If you require any further help or advice please call our Customer Services on 150 from a pay monthly Orange phone, or 07973-100150 from a landline. Our Helpdesk is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and any of our representatives will be pleased to assist you.

I trust the above is of assistance

Kind regards

Comment:
Dear Technical Support,

I would like to know why, on my new Sony Ericsson K700i, there are two camera buttons - one on the side of the phone, and one on the right hand soft key? I personally only need one button for it, and I would also like the option to alter the shortcuts/soft keys; this option is stated in the phone's manual (and I would also expect to be able to do it) but it appears to have been removed from the phone's software! I know I am not the only person to have commented on this (see link below) and I would appreciate a response stating how Orange intends to deal with this problem. Many thanks and I look forward to hearing from you soon. PS Perhaps you would like to read these message board entries from other Orange customers who have the same complaint: http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=61978

Can I suggest that anyone who wants to actually complain to Orange (as opposed to just getting a stock reply from some CS automaton who then just deletes the email). Contact the Executive Office at Orange. Their email address is executive.office@orange.co.uk - I'll follow up with phone and fax numbers if anyone wants to actually speak to one of the staff in the MD's office.

I'll jump onto the band wagon. Just sent this to SE:

I have an Orange branded K700i. As you are no doubt aware the phone's software has been butchered by removing features one would expect to be on a SE phone. After contacting Orange they informed me that it was your (SE's) fault that the Orange branded software is so unusable as you (SE) had programmed the software. With this advice they also advised me to try to get the phone reflashed at a SE centre. This failed becuase (I am told by the SE centre) the phone is locked. This in turn obviously means that I can never update the sfotware to fix any bugs that may become apparent. After telling Orange this, they again blamed you (SE) for not allowing the reflash. I would like to know your reply to this. My aim is to have an SE K700i phone with normal software, either by replacing the phone (because Orange have supplied a phone so unlike to the phone I thoguht I was buying, it is unusable) or have the software reflashed. This problem has been going on for over a month now and I would like a swift resolution if at all possible! Many thanks, Phil Small

Thanks DW123!

Just sent the following the the email address you provided:

Dear sir/madam,

I, like many other owners, wish to register my strong dissatisfaction at the poor customisation of the original firmware on the recently released Orange K700i phone. I have owned Ericsson/Sony Ericsson phones for several years and have become accustomed to and appreciative of the very useful shortcut features included with these phones. These remained after orange customised the T68/68i, and the T610, however it has for some reason been removed from
the K700i. This is not satisfactory, and neither Orange nor the retailer I purchased the phone from have been able to resolve the problem.

Please be assured that this IS a problem, and not an error in the manual as has been alleged by Orange customer services on many occasions. The feature is standard on all recent SE phones and is included on the un-branded K700.

I would like to have a phone that operates as it was intended to by Sony Ericsson. The loss of both shortcuts (the 'More' button as well as the joystick shortcuts) is in my opinion appalling!

I look forward to hearing how you intend to resolve this issue for me.

RESPONSE

Further to your recent email, I am sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction
with the Sony Ericsson K700i. Orange install their own software to enable
the phone to work at the optimum level with our SIMs.

We have no plans to introduce any new firmware for your phone. You can
download any available firmware from third parties, however, we do not
support this and it would be done entirely at your own risk.

Whilst I appreciate this may not be to your satisfaction, I trust this is
explanatory.

Ok - here is my contribution!!

I am writing to you to register my disappointment upon discovering that Orange has chosen to make, what I consider, major changes to the user interface on the Sony Ericsson K700.

I was intending to upgrade to the K700 when my contract comes up for renewal next week. However I have now discovered that you have chosen to remove at least two of the most desirable features of this phone.

You have chosen to completely remove the "shortcuts" system. I use this extensively since it gives me the ability to choose what function the "left joystick" function has. Since I use WAP an awful lot, I have the left joystick on my T610 set to "bookmarks" so that I can get to the bookmarks quickly.

I also note that you have chosen the replace the "more" soft key on the idle screen with an (additional) "camera" button. The phone already has a camera button on the side of the phone - so this seems particularly silly! The "more" button permits access to useful items like "switch off Bluetooth", "turn on silent" etc which are difficult to get to using the rest of the user interface.

I am now in a bit of a quandary.

I could leave Orange and go to another service provider who have not chosen to change the user interface, or I could wait until Orange "comes to its senses" and decides to restore these functions!

I look forwards to your reply.

Regards

I too have written to Orange - the same to both their correspondence and executive address. I wrote to the former 3 weeks ago but have received no response and they refused to put me through to the dept when I rang 150.

The email was too long to include here. I really encourage others to do this, in this commerical climate its only the weight of customer feeling that makes a difference.
