hmm very interesting. It seems to have a different ui, I wonder, could it be hardscreen UIQ3? But that's probably too much to hope for.
It seems to have the D-pad, a larger screen (than K750) and if it's a K750 upgrade, I wouldn't be surprised if it does have 3 megapixel camera. Hopefully vanquish, this will be the imaging phone you are waiting for.

Of course, SE is marketing the Walkman brand as hard as they can!
Sony made Walkman the perfect brand during the 80's. It could be the original Walkman portable cassette player, as well as the CD Walkman.
It didn't have to be a Sony product either. People generally referred to these portable CD players as Walkman anyway. The brand name Walkman was that strong.
Since, Sony have made several mistakes and lost the race to Apple.
Today, people are talking about general mp3 players OR iPods. No other mp3 player has made such an impact as the iPod. Today, most kids know what an iPod is but the Walkman was nearly becoming a thing of the past.
Once again, Sony lost the mp3 race to Apple. Of course they're trying to get back on track pushing the Walkman brand... |

the reason Sony lost to Apple was due to their rigid adherence to drm. If they weren't so shit scared that mp3 would ruin their profit making off the backs of artists, then they could have been up there from the start. As it was, they failed to accept that MP3 players were what the market wanted. They thought they could stem the tide of mp3 players by pushing expensive, atrac only music devices. How stupid
I have great respect for sony engineering, but their proprietary and DRM issues have really held Sony back. They have survived in the market due to the quality of their hardware, but if they stop profiteering then they could easily take over the lead in the mp3 player market.

yeah there was a conflict of interest between the sony music label and the electronics division where they tried to control it
i heard that the music division sued the electronics, but i'm not sure if it's true

I think the Walkman brand is still very strong and has recently benefited from a strong marketing campaign with the release of the new range (very cool!) of MP3 players.
And with Walkman branding strongly visible present on 4 handsets this will get stronger.

Someone once stated here that the ipod has no branding. Well there is no "ipod" splashed all over, but an ipod or accessory is instantly recognisable as ipod. The gloss white theme, with rounded edges and minimalist design is very distinct.
I think SE and Sony are trying to revive the Walkman brand and use it to give their devices the same visibility and consistant styling that the ipod enjoys.
I must admit, when buying accessories for my phone, I like to get that little SE symbol. It's cool, and it will influence me to buy SE accessories, all other factors being equal. The Walkman brand will have the same effect. Eg: Some dude with a walkman phone that they lucked into on a contract, is suddenly curious about the latest Sony Walkman MP3 players. Or some chick looking for a phone recognises the walkman logo that's also on her much loved mp3player, so buys the walkman phone.

Very true mate, at least that was the case for me, I have a perfecty good creative zen micro, but when i first saw the new sony mp3 I fell in 'lust' with it. I have since spent several weeks in rehab and can now again look at my zen with affection

@max
I like the invisible look too, it's very cool !
@van Of course a colour screen is nicer but IMO on a non picture/video playing mp3 a little unnecessary as they tend to zap the battery quicker. Although the sony's performance would still probably be great, a colour screen with that design imo would ruin the look.
I reckon based on the excellent battery performance and the overall weight of the player it has it's own deisel generator on board

Now that's the fuel cell I'm waiting for - screw hydrogen, give me raw petroleum and cubic micro-inches.
One of these perhaps? It's a fully working 1/6 scale V8

Walkman is a brand, people associate it with high quality music devices. So of course, SE are going to milk it for all its worth because they have the largest market share in music mobile phones.
I'm not complaining, I think it's a good idea and I love SE. |
