You cant blame someone else for not employing the business strategy you approve of, but still I agree with my Ninja. low end is all well and good for marketshare, but they have given us nothing to look forward to (just hopeful rumours, NONE of which are guaranteed to originate from SE themselves). They should at least maintain our interest, if they cant be bothered to have the same drive they once did.
All the high end customers they used to have used UIQ, but theres very little new for that original fanbase IMO. Id just like to see more of the old SE who would expand the field with their high end powerhouse handsets. It is, to me, how they made a name for themselves in the first place.

@ S4K1s, Hoping you may look at these few radical ideas .... tell me what you think, please .

Considering SE just lost their first title of the best camera phone to the N82, I'm thinking SE is going BACK to the drawing board on their next Cybershot high-end phone, and autofocus is not enough. I'm HOPING, nah, EXPECTING hardware video decoding/encoding support for pictures & video! I'd like to have DIVX video recording support. It only fits because many of us - at least I do - have a PS3 and would like to transfer pics & video over to my PS3 via bluetooth. I can do it over USB though which is pretty cool.

SE should NOW make the Cybershot lineup with GLASS lenses on their phones from NOW ON! I'm hoping to see the high-end Cybershot delayed past August this year and when announced includes the Liquid Lense technology which gives Optical Zoom! Many of us have been tainted with the Cybershot brand due to the K850i BROD/Reboot issues. I still LOVE it but I'm hoping that Metal is used extensively from now on in a Cybershot phone class for the top tier model to resemble quality build, not a fragile phone.

:Walkman: class. Hmm where to start. Many ppl expect a 3.5mm jack directly into the phone, but you'll loose accessory connection. I'd like a dedicated DSP chip within ALL future models for hardware decoding & encoding of audio - yes Encoding. I expect FUTURE Walkman SE phones to have LOUDER speakers (louder by 100% minimum), and possibly dual microphones. I want to be able to record a live musical session at the Jazz festival! I want to record a lecture in University/College and it come out CLEAR & in stereo. I'd WANT to have 3 speakers in the top tier Walkman phone. Why? I want Stereo and a dedicated BASS speaker for when MegaBASS is activated. Oh yeah baby bring on the portable BOOM BOX!!! They're on the right track with the w760i with stereo speakers.

Are these ideas crazy? Do you think they'll sell?

Lastly I'm hoping aGPS is included in ALL mid-high tier phones by SE (walkman / cybershot) along with Tracker pre-installed on the Walkmans (available for download for Cybershot), and WayFinder/GoogleMaps for Cybershot phones with GeoTagging of your photos - showing location & altitude to help tell the story behind your photos & video. Oh yeah all Cybershot phones to be ONLY mid-high end models with Liquid Optical Zoom, while Walkman phones get AF in their 3.2MP or higher offerings. I think that all these ideas will give the market a REASON to accept the segmentation that SE is doing to all the phones.

i have a bs in economics ... fwiw

With a degree in economics [I'm not sure what exactly bs is/maybe that is because we use different terms in different countries], you should realize that it is important for a company to focus on all ends of the market, which is exactly Sony Ericsson's tactic here.

When one Sony Ericsson representative says, "we will focus on the low-end market," everyone on this forum starts complaining and whining. Does that mean Sony Ericsson will only release low-end phones, no! Of course not! For christ sake, we are only in the fourth month of 2008. There is still eight months of the year for Sony Ericsson to release higher end phones.

how many have suffered since this new focus from shoddy workmanship and build quality? how many have had problems with "flagship" phones not operating competently when they are released? then tell me how selling poorly produced products is good for business. its this leaking, this redundancy this lack of ambition within R&D (or maybe even corporate doesnt see this segment as deserving of a new highend faceplate because of the poor sales of its last 2 flagship phones (P990/P1i) poor sales of shitty products and a company will shy away from producing them, almost cyclical(poor product > poor sales > reflected by the company putting forth less effort to produce said headsets > less sales of subsequent offerings))

Firstly, no one literally suffers if a company decides to change their business tactic. It is the consumer's choice whether to purchase the product. With regards to built-quality, I do agree that Sony Ericsson has had a few problems recently with their phones, especially with the W580.

In terms of software problems, like Mizzle said in his blog, Sony Ericsson will be releasing new features in their phones via updates [i.e. tv out].

i think this company had a great direction when it came out merging the best with the best, but unlike BOTH of its parent companies it is reliant on lowend sales and market penetration/saturation/share, they should also remember that brand retention is a huge part of growth, the ppl that buy a $600 are your best advertisement. somehow they think that you can bypass that.

As I said earlier, and I'll say it one more time, I do agree that Sony Ericsson should release a few high end phones for a better market penetration and I'm sure you agree with this too. This is what Nokia have been doing for a long time, which is why they are sucessful.

now onto your other statements, im not certain your first language is english so something may have been lost in the translation, so ill not nitpick. but SE was revered for their disregard for what the commonplace phone/business phone was. they PIONEERED the multimedia touchscreen phone in an aesthetically pleasing and functional way. now we have an over abundance and portfolio clogging lowend philosophy.

Correct, English is not my first language, but I'm not using a translator. Before you start commenting on other's English, I think you should begin doing some house cleaning on your part. ill = to be sick. Correction: I will. Also, the bolded statement above is a poor/unusual combination of verbs.

For the last sentence: let me pose this question to you, from the summer of last year, how many phones have Sony Ericsson released are low-end [including mid-low]? Go ahead and compare this to Nokia.

What you have been doing is simply making assumptions.

@clauf I don't think that Motorola was the brightest example ! + I think that nobody here has a problem with SE releasing low-end devices per se. Problem is in the fact that we all used to be EXCITED with SE phones, doesn't matter if it was because of the design, or the "features", or the whole package ... Another problem is that for the last year and a half, SE is constantly acting "CHEAP" and putting out devices that are crippled without ANY reason whatsoever ! It wouldn't cost them much to put AF or LED on W910, it would cost them nothing to put advanced FIND in P1. Camera cover on X1 ? Naah... These things have nothing to do with R&D or cutting costs, they are simply decisions that reflect that "let's sell them last years cr..p, and buy ourselves some new Bentley's !" attitude that looks like it down from SONY On the other hand, I would probably stop whining if only they didn't ditch the JogDial from P5

I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall now. I do want Sony Ericsson to release some exciting phone. But everyone just whines and complains -it's disgusting. There's this negativity and pessimism among many of the members of Esato now. I haven't been a long member, but I have noticed a huge change in this forum than before. At least Sony Ericsson has not been reusing designs unlike Nokia.

when apple continues to produce shitty mp3 players, and dominate the market, what do you think that does to the rest of the market, instead of aiming higher, we have this glut of mediocrity, people aim for the top while in this instance its the middle ground. same philosophy over at SE.

please refrain from poking fun at my english writing skills, i was courteous enough to look past it, as the only reason i said something was that it seemed as though what i intended to convey had not been received. based upon your response i could see that, but i could also see that you dont write english as a main language, so i was hoping to bypass that in an extra explanation. i can write fine as ive been published before however this is an informal message board im not going to have thesis level grammar ... time consuming.

and consumers DO suffer if, based on company history a level of quality is expected especially at certain price points, no one wants to have a squeaky door hinge on there $400 purchase, thats just insane ... as far as it being consumer choice, sure ... but an expectation comes with all purchases having faulty housings is not something i should have to worry about, regardless of my choice.

i cant speak to the software as ive never programmed a phone before. but i have programmed its time consuming so i do agree id rather have the phone than all the features off the bat.

SE may not reuse designs but the reuse the internals ... so whats the difference?

mizz/pk/m-1/ares: what weve seen for a slider (uiq 3.3) aka "paris" right now, is this in fact their most robust offering this year, or is this similar to the w910 == w960 a la` last year when the k850, w910 and, w960 phones were announced? i ask this because we saw the w910 beforehand but for the most part everyone was blindsided by the w960 thinking that it was the w910 and so forth.
