OLED still need more R&D to be used in the wild, the current generation viable only for limited colors or lower resolution, as increasing any will decrease the lifetime, all this coz of it's organic natural
that Sony 11 OLED may have high resolution compared to it's size but just look at it's price !! it still cost too much not only for R&D but also coz it has very low manufacturing capacity...
they need to find the correct formula
1- longer it's life with true colors & high resolution
2- simple manufacturing for mass-production
3- ability to produce several size's and resolutions without too much fuzz

if you read the page, the whole of 509 then most of your conjecture has been addressed ...
#2 is the only feasible argument right now.
the colors (blue specifically) last about 30,000hrs the others are closer to 55,000 in terms of a cellphone, thats MORE than reasonable as its ~3.5 years CONSTANTLY being on. as for TVs ... well thats just unacceptable you want at least 10 years with any display technology that was the main drawback to plasma when it first debuted. but for a phone thats completely realistic especially for a technology thats really in its infancy and has only ONE real product for the market to consume on a display sized level.
the resolution is 320x220 and the larger panels clock in at 960x540 its only a matter of time before those densities rise, remember these are proofs of concept. these will be EXCELLENT in the sunlight, man if had $10million and my own division at SE you all would love me! aesthetically we may disagree but as far as willingness to crush technology constraints out there im all for it. VISION, so many choices so much technology i say make it, put it on the table and let the other guys play catch up have the industry push itself, you had apple nudge it last year, and we have SE going gung ho with the X1 (fabulous radios)
paris (what we see or even what we want) will hopefully not be an incremental jump from the N95/96 iPhone clan ... im hoping for something that can do it all and the surprise me with that little bit extra functionality. faster menu and application response times is mandatory.
MANDATORY! as well as faster cam operations.
"why isnt anyone throwing these prototypes into buckets of water ... the bubbles let you know theres space to be saved" -sony exec in reponse to an engineer telling him their protype MDisc Recorder was the smallest they could make it.

@my ninja,
I read it all before I post, thought I think I missed to reply on some points
the problem is OLED need larger market than mobilephone to start with for better mass-production, and if you take a look, there's only three markets 1) TV's 2) Computer Displays 3) laptops
in computer dispaly the resolution is problomatic, and in laptops it's even worse as laptops displays used to have more resolution in smaller size's
so the only thing lift here is TV's and duo to the large R&D cost's now, it's very expensive ( that Sony 11'' panel is just an example ) and this will make the tech needs more time, even if we take a chance and add both computer markets in line with TV as supporters, all these three markets need longer life than 3.5 or 4 years...
so we have soe tiny markets like photoframe or PMP and mobile phones wich is the bigger from these but still not that much...
so it still needs time, current mobile phone market even if it's huge and big it can't support new technologies like OLED as OLED need's a hell a lot of R&D and mobile phones can't be that expensive, they need some thing proven to be cheap/quality/mass-friendly, and the current stage of full color OLED's doesn't qualify for these !!

If Sony was able to use OLED screen four years ago in the last line-up of their PDA line, which is the Sony Clie VZ90, I don't think using the OLED screen instead of LCD ones as the screen for Sony Ericsson's upcoming phones would be that hard or impractical, for a high-end model atleast.
Sony Clie VZ90 has, not only a great screen, but a nice camera and excellent sound quality as well. It is more like the future-packed phones that we have today.
The OLED has been around for a while, and it should be ready by now for mass-production.
I hope we will see some high-end phones form SE with OLED screen anytime soon.

Thanks Spitfire!
But won't they mind questions in English? I know it's a bilingual site- but I know if someone started posting comments or questions on a czech mobile site in english- people would not be happy...
If we do decide to post some questions - we should get them together here and have a couple representatives ask them- so we don't want to post a bunch of similar/same questions.
My question- How will the cybershot brand evolve this year? What will be some of the highlights of the top model?
(I'd really just want to ask- tell us everything you know about Shiho- but I'm not sure it would happen... )

OK, let's get the questions here, I hope someone will carry them over there.
My question is:
Is SE going to work on the future devices' firmware from scratch or build on current core firmware used in P990/P1 etc. ?
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD |
