Hmm - does it not fit inside the phone, or is it something to loose very quickly? |

wuaooo stylus
My initial thought of it was a lipstick! :
The stylus should be kept within the team, as in the P1 or HTC, maybe there were no more free space?

Maybe they're so confident about a finger touch interface that they belive the stylus will be rarely needed - I wouldn't be surprised if they ditch HWR altogether. I think this would be a shame though, and that they should go the other way, and make it a proper HWR system, i.e. one that recognises complete words rather than just single letters.
This would mean however a vastly more complex system that is capable of learning an individual's handwriting style. My guess is that they simply won't spend the money on the R&D...
EDIT: I can't believe that it's impossible to incorporate the stylus into the handset design, remember the slim profile of the p800's? If a slightly more ergonomic version of this could be made, out of a less flimsy material (aluminium - with a plastic tip?), then the phone needn't be that much bigger to accommodate.
The focus of the marketing of this phone seems to be primarily on 'entertainment', maybe they feel that text applications are of little relevance to their intended market. Personally, I'd counter this by saying that the ubiquity of mobile blog type websites, along with the average user's multi-threaded lifestyle could make the success of such a segmented marketing policy rather limited.
I don't want an 'entertainment' device, or a 'business' device, I want a multifunctional device that has the capability to perform as I want it to. I guess what I'm saying is that I'd like a phone that adapts to my lifestyle, rather than have to adapt to some marketing exec's ideal of what my lifestyle should be.

Besides, the UI right now a mix between PSP style and ugly s60 v5 stuff. Seems they wonīt take advantage of the awesome UIQ Touch concepts. Of course not, they sent all people away. FAIL
Given that have not been able to deliver a decent Symbian product since the P900 the "Good" Symbian people must have ALL left many years ago.
IDOU is already missing the most important lead ever had..... a jog wheel! I tried the iProne for week (What a joke that thing is!) and have a Nokia 5800XM (alongside my trusty W960)
but they ALL fail in one area...... they all need a sensible way of scrolling accurately I have 900 contacts and touch screen scrolling is a no no on all bar the W960 if you are in a hurry.
Do us ALL a favour get one thing right in 2010 (This thing will NOT be around until then IMHO) put a jog wheel on it you will then have one HUGE advantage over all the others straight away.
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot. |

And make it a 5-way jog at that, this was one of the simplest and quickest methods of navigation - wonderfully intuitive!
Seems like the current ploy is to force a single type of interaction with the phone, what they fail to realise is that people use their devices in a wide variety of contexts, and so need a choice of input methods. |

What we see is removal of jog wheel from SE mobile phones.
They do it for reason - we can agree or not but the jog wheels are mechanically unreliable. I had 2 or 3 broken wheels in different S/SE models. The most reliable was CMD-CD5
I myself appreciate the wheel convenience so if some vendor released wheeled phone , last thing considered would be reliability. But for producer, releasing potentially faulty model is PITA of its customer support.
Btw LG has model with jog wheel and sensor screen but otherwise crippled, so we didn't buy.

Talking of average customers, multitude of input methods is not absolute advantage.
I remember a post here, telling "p1i has TOO many input methods, it confuses". I know a lot of people chosing phone like "I want just a phone, with buttons you know - to dial numbers". And I constantly read "UIQ is for techno geeks, it does not provide valuable profit share".
So SE may want to concentrate on what they do best - on great 123 phones, to dial numbers listen music etc.

Well the jogdial's navigation superiority and poor durability is comparable to joysticks. joysticks are far more convenient to use than dpad but is prone to dust which causes it to malfunction.

I agree 200%, the 5 way jog dial was absolute simple, quick, intuitive, "navigation genius".
I used my CMD Z5 for the best part of 4 years (2000 - 2004) & only gave it up when the charger went & I could no longer get hold of one as Sony had since become SE. Anyway the ease of use & almost full one handed operation the jog dial allowed was second to none. (man i loved that phone!)
OK i agree there were reliability issues over time (mine was still working fine when i left it though) but we are now talking nearly 9 years or so since these were first implemented. Surely in this day & age micro-switches etc have become more stable & reliable? to be able to incorperate the 5 way back in phones?
I for one, would love to see this navigation method back again.
Cheers
p.s. if anyone has an old working CMD Z5 charger, i'd jump at the chance of taking it off thier hands to fire up that old bad boy again! |

What I can say:
- No problems in CD5, J5, J7, Z7 (what a great phone)
- wheels malfunction in P800 and P910
Good old Sony

The location of the jog dial minimised the dust issue the subsequent joysticks suffered from. Another + point in my eyes in the argument for jog dial.
The SE T610 I had directly after this suffered the stuck/non responsive joystick after about 6 months.
Anyway back on topic I think the combination of a touchscreen + 5way jog dial would complement each other fantastically. |
