this was asked in my highschool RE class, and the answer was "it's not a sin if you're doing it to release sexual tension but it is if you're fantasising about someone, which would be considered the same as adultery". i wonder what causes the sexual tension then?

No, masturbation is not a sin (just keep David Hasselhoff out of it and you'll be okay..)
Masturbating while thinking about Pamela Anderson is a rite of passage, not a sin. Thinking about Paris Hilton is scary (I can't work out if I think that chick is HOT, or butt ugly) but not a sin.
