Im looking for some help buying a pc

I bought my current pc a few years ago when was the best i could get (P4 3.0G with HyperThreading, 1Gb RAM, 120Gb Hard Disk, ATI radeon 9550), at that time I could run almost any app and game available but now i cant run HD Video, games at high graphic detail, and other things.

I would like to buy a new pc able to do those things i cant now, i think i have two options.

- Buy a whole new pc
- Buy a new mother board, rams and processor, case and PSU.

Thats where i need help, what is the best option based on price/reliability, in case your advise is to buy a whole pc, which one? In case your advise is to buy the parts, which ones?

My advice would be hang on for a little bit longer before upgrading. Reason is, HD-DVD Players, Blue-Ray players and graphics cards that are capable of displaying true HD Video are only just emerging now. They're hard to find and very expensive, however by the end of the year Nvidia's PureVideo HD cards will be much more widespread and no doubt quite a bit cheaper.

I really don't think you'll even need a new processor and motherboard to do what you want. 3Ghz is fine even for today's most demanding games, I think it's your graphics card that is causing the problem.

However, you sound like a bit of an enthusiast and so if you were to buy a new system, here's what I'd suggest you look out for:

-Dual core processor capable motherboard. AMD's X2 processors are my personal favourite, particularly for gaming. Asus and Gigabyte provide a number of good quality DC motherboards with varying aditional features.

-Dual channel memory. At least 2Gb of it to be precise! You can buy Dual channel kits now to make it easier.

-SLI / Crossfire PCI-express capable board. As you know, SLI is the ability to run two graphics cards at the same time. Nvidia (SLI) seem to be a little more ahead of the game is this department than ATI (Crossfire) at the moment. Either way, make sure that the motherboard supports one or the other and buy the cards accordingly. You can't put 2 ATI cards in a SLI motherbaord and get the SLI effect. Also, the cards will both have to be capable of displaying HD Video, so the Nvidia PureVideo series is looking likely.

As I said earlier, personally I'm going to wait until next year before I start playing with this kind of stuff. Mainly because of the cost at the moment but also because Vista will be out at around the same time that the HD Video stuff becomes more mainstream.

I think you are right maybe i should wait a little longer to buy a top range system, with my current pc i can play 720p HD with less than 5% errors in playback i think and play games at moderate quality.

- Does AGP ports are still used? I remember some guy told me that all new graphic cards only work with PCI express

Yeah, PCI-e is the way to go now. It's also the only way to get SLI or crossfire.

Hi Cyclovision,I got PC problems more than problems...

So now,i am facing a problem...
http://www.esato.com/board/viewtopic.php?topic=127826#post1730748

and i gave it to repair and they replaced the backlight ...But now the colours(colors) are messed up ...the white colour has a pinkish hue.I tried playing around with the settings...tweaking gamma, contrast and brightness..also tried tweaking individual settings of red, green and blue...but no help.
What should i do??Can any settings help or should i take it back to repair?

I think it needs to go back for repair again

There aren't any settings I know of other than the ones you've tried, so I'd guess that they either haven't repaired it properly or something else has gone wrong with it.

I talked to the PC guy today...he said that the backlight was at fault so he replaced the entire lcd and backlight unit. When he heard my complaints,he said that some of the settings may need to be changed but it can be done only at the service centre using some softwares they have...so the repair will be done soon.
Thanks Cyclovision for your advice.

Jenbones insists on calling me cyclovision too, I wouldn't worry about it!

It might be that you need to reinstall the touchpad driver to get full functionality back. You can download the latest driver for your laptop from this page:

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/sup[....]hpcpqnk/us/locate/63_6022.html

If that doesn't work, and you can't find any settings dialogue in control panel or the start menu (all programs), then maybe the repair guy damaged the ribbon cable whilst repairing your screen

Anyway, try reinstalling the driver and see how it goes

@thuggie .. I thought HP laptops came with this nifty pre installed app called HP update...at least mine did.... it scans for any drivers that need updating, & downloads/installs them from the hp server...alternatively you could manually get them from the hp website...

@mrao

I think it's all done off the HP website, there is an automatic product identifier and upgrade advisor on their support pages. I've never managed to get it to work properly though so you'll have to tell me the secret
