I know a high resolution display is cool and all and it looks nice, but would anyone care to explain to me why this is such a deciding factor for many of you? I mean, the N95 and N96 have what, QVGA screens? And yet they seem to be regarded by many as the best in their classes and they seem very capable of doing what it says on the box.
My W910i has a QVGA screen and its just fine thanks.

If i were to choose between WQVGA and VGA i'll choose the former - performance wise. having VGA screen in a mobile display does not work for me. Paris should exceed all the performance test to support the USEB's statement "to slay other flagship phones on the market" imo

Well maybe, but if you have something like the X1 with a 3" screen and WVGA and then another "flagship" super phone from SE (if X1 is a flagship, some say yes other say no) has "only" WQVGA, with a 2.8" (I'm guessing) then I will not be impressed.
A jump from 0.2" less screen size and WVGA to WQVGA is a bit to much, if one compare the X1 screen with the Paris (rumored screen size) screen.
Current mobilephone: P1i and my now old K800i, and before that W800i, V800i, Z600i, and T310. Waiting for X10. |

What about jog-dial? Is it dead? No more jog-dial for P-series? |

Since I would be impressed with a VGA screen, then I would be impressed with an even better screen.

Given how talked up this phone is, I refuse to believe that it lacks autofocus, quadband, HSPDA, and a higher-than QVGA screen.
If it didn't have these things, it would just be another phone, and clearly this is not the case.
1) Will definitely have autofocus. Not only has every P-Series had this, but 5 MP no AF makes no sense. The W890i had no AF because it's an A200 Walkman phone and we all know AF is the difference between Cyber-shot and Walkman (A200) phones.
2) Will have HSD(-U?)PA. Not only have other (non-UIQ) phones had this, but the software and the hardware supports it and there's no reason for this not to be included.
3) I'm still somewhat pessimistic about quadband, but again, it makes no sense if this weren't included, even though no other UIQ SE has had it before. If this is really supposed to be the flagship, SE would shoot themselves in the collective foot by crippling such a marvelous device by not sticking one measly frequency band in it. And it's not just us whiny North Americans complaining about this--I'm sure there are plenty of Europeans who would benefit from 850 Mhz when they travel abroad.
4) Screen. I fully expect it to be VGA. However, it could also very realistically be HVGA (unless this isn't supported, in which case we're back to VGA). QVGA is simply not possible, especially given the X1 and the flagship status. For those looking to the video screenshots trying to determine resolution, this is quite impossible on such (sorry, Mizzle) bad quality shots and what is most likely a faked screen (for the video).
Phones simply aren't talked up this much if they don't end up delivering in the end.

I think we have to lower our hopes and expectations a bit. Some of the people who are posting here are right, the specs of the phone are getting less impressive by the day. I think in the beginning we were far too hopeful.

But why shouldnt we be? The technology is there, theyve certainly spent long enough to implement it, and its missing in their line up. Of course they should provide the specs we anticipate to a fairly accurate degree. |

I wish it has a sperm detector, you get a lot of sperm on the bus and train seats these days.
The G900 has a 5MP camera and the C902 so how will the P5 be different to them? I guess a good screen makes a difference but otherwise I don't know the technical aspects. Someone enlighten me.
Also, doesn't the screen type affect the battery? Maybe thats why there isn't the top screen that everybody wants. P5 has top be a good phone before anything else. |

the biggest reasons for upping a QVGA screen to VGA/WVGA is mainly for browsing webpages, and GPS maps
at least these are the main reasons in Japan
the biggest challenge would be keeping the phone as responsive (imagine 4x pixels to handle) and finding a processor that is cheap enough, fast enough and power-saving enough, yet not "too new" to ensure a stable supply for worldwide launch; where the first and the last conditions are less of a concern in Japan.
so it's hard out there.
badassmam: generally speaking, for a mid-high end 3G phone in 2008, power consumption depends on, size of the backlight panel> radio> processor> number of pixels
so it won't take much more power if you switch to VGA, whilst keeping the same processor and same diagonal screen size; but the processor would be too slow 99.999% of the time, and you'd be forced to find a new processor which, most of the time would be more power hungry given the same technology at that time

In the camera department? Probably not much. But the P5 will have other features like GPS, a QWERTY rockerboard and whatever else.
About the screen: Yes, I would prefer a great battery to a great screen if given an either/or choice, but of course it would be nice to have both. Plus, what is "bad" battery life? All SEs get great battery life, I think, so would 7 hours talktime on GSM/EDGE with a VGA screen be "bad?" Especially considering the competition has a 950 mAh battery and the P5 will have probably a 1200 or higher?
I still believe it to be VGA. But boy do I wanna see some official specs.

So if it has VGA screen, then it is likely to have a new more powerful processor. Maybe that was the hardware change that happened to the prototype that PK had.
I'm still not sure about the pics. It may not be the P1 successor but instead, another new release. Similar thing happened with the X1, it was a total shock that nobody was prepared for. There are more phones to come and I wouldn't be surprised it that wasn't the P5 but I like the way SE are going. |
