When watching YouTube videoes of G900 demonstrations, I just think the UI is too slow. I used to blame that on Symbian, but the K850 seems just as slow. 
Is there no option like "Turn of useless animation and transitions"? It's doing nothing but slowing down the phone. Any kind of themes that are less slow than other themes?
Any way at all to prevent having to wait 1-2 seconds pr key press for a reaction?
I'm actually using a good old Z600 for work. Though slow for sms, it reacts instantly in the menu. Such a "feature" seems to be way down the priority list today.
i guess its slow cuase SE only put in a 200Mhz processor...unlike the Nokia N series which mostly use the 300+Mhz version of the ARM cpu.
camera quality on the G900 is GREATLY dissapointing...but i guess its still a nice phone in a way |

Ok... I've had my N82 for a few days now. I have to say I'm overall pleased with it, although it does have some issues I'm not happy about. I especially like the GPS + Sportstracker stuff, which can also be found in the C702. And of course the camera picture quality is as expected and the video recording is even better than expected.
Although I liked the good old Psion devices (and I still have my MC218), I've never liked the slow Symbian versions in phones. But the N82 is quite fast and acceptable.
Anyway, here is a mix of things I was worried about before ordering, and things that's come to my attention afterwards:
1st issue: Lousy headset
The N82 is shipped with a poor headset, not suitable for music. You need to order another one, like the WH-700 or HS-44 instead. I ordered the HS-44 with play-buttons on.
You'll probably also need to order another headset for many Sony Ericsson phones if you want better sound.
2nd issue: No smileys in SMS
You do not have the option of sending SMS with smileys, like you've been able to in all Sony Ericsson phones (that I know of). This is a Symbian thing, and "normal" Nokias does have smileys. The workaround I used was to buy A-SMS. It's not an ultimate solution since you do have to select A-SMS when writing a new SMS, but at least incoming SMS's will be recognized by A-SMS and displayed with smileys.
3rd issue: New user interface
This has actually proved to be much less of a problem than expected. I've been able to map most buttons to work the way I'm used to from my Sony Ericsson phones. I press right to open file-explorer, left to type a new sms, down to get the contacts etc. This makes it a whole lot easier. The only thing missing is the ability to use the number-keys as shortcuts for sub menus, but that doesn't work in all Sony Ericsson sub menus either.
4th issue: Not possible to turn down volume after loading Java game
This is a ridiculous flaw which kinda ruins the possibility to even run Java games. For some reason sound in Java is running on the same "channel" as the "Warning sounds" in the settings. That means, you can turn sound in Java games on/off by setting "Warning sounds" on/off. There's no volume setting for these warning sounds, so it always plays very high - unless you turn it off. Obviously a big embarresing flaw, and one that I'm quite displeased with. If anyone knows a workarround for this dissaster, please let me know.
5th issue: Birthdays no longer shown in calendar
I knew about this before switching. In Sony Ericsson phones birthdays are attached to the indivitual contact, and automatically shown in the calendar, though without an option of showing the actual age of the person. You have to enter such anniversaries again, but it's still not possible to show the actual age of the person. Such a nice feature was apparently only available in the good old Psion devices. It keeps puzzling me why it hasn't been possible since those days.
6th issue: Not working with Linux / Not an SMS phone
I used to use MyPhoneExplorer for Windows to send and receive SMS messages. With Nokia you can use Oxygen or Nokia PC Suite. For Linux you can use tools such as Wammu or kMobileTools which works fine with my W800, but not with my N82 for some reason. This is mostly annoying because the N82 isn't too great for SMS writing. The keys are simply too small doesn't have enough space.

You obviously haven't read the whole thread. It's because I want the best possible camera. None of the Sony Ericsson phones beats the N82 on that area, and the W890 certainly doesn't.
I don't think Nokia has more bugs than Sony Ericsson anymore. They used to have yes, but to me it really looks like the tables have switched.

IMO it really depends on what you want...
Nokia's aren't the best looking phones but they're (most of them) quality. I personally like the fact that Nokia's phones perform very well, but are a little on the chubby side instead of being super stylish with bugs and not performing the best (K850i).
I mean, don't get me wrong, the K850i is pretty compact with a nice set of features but the glossy surfaces, dust and bugs (+ camera issues) make for a bad combo IN MY OPINION.
I tried to bring myself to buy the W960i. But no, people have problems such as creaking, and the screen bugging up. I tried to bring myself to buy the K850i. but no, people have problems with dust behind the lens cover and BROD. Also, the camera gives everything this white tint (or whatever you call it). Basically, the pictures aren't as saturated as pictures taken by other phones.

I've just discovered a huge dissapointing fact about the N82.
I'm not allowed to send my own JAR files via bluetooth to other phones. It says "Protected, can't be sent". That's just plain stupid.
Anyone knows of a workarround on this? |

Look for a freeware "ActiveFile" or "Xplore". You can send any files thru them via BT etc |

Yea thanks. I found Y-browser + a plugin that also did the trick, but will check out ActiveFile and Xplore as well.

I read the whole thread. Buy a digital camera – no camera phone will beat a dedicated digital camera for quality – it will not happen – at least not for a few years yet.

I have a digital camera. The problem is that I never carry it around with me, and thus I never take any pictures nor videos. So in the end I'll have no "diary" pictures. A camera phone is the only solution for me.

Well... I've had the N82 for 1½ week now or so. I've bought a HS-44 + AD-44 headset to make it easy to start and stop the media player, just like I could on the W800 on the side of the phone.
I bought and installed A-SMS to get smileys in my SMS messages. I installed Y-browser + a plugin in order to be able to send JAR files via bluetooth to other phones.
In order to get more than 24 hour batterytime I turned UMTS off, turned down the brightness of the screen and keep bluetooth off as well. All those things makes the N82 usable, if we disregard the small keys. Yet I have to say it was a mistake getting it.
It's almost amusing how the manufacturer always manages to make some incredible stupid decision. Nokia has in all the Symbian S60v3 series (and probably more) decided that volume in music from Java games can't be turned down or up. So in other words, it's useless for Java games. That's not so lucky for me who happens to be a JavaME developer. I would have liked to know this before I bought it, coz then I wouldn't.
It's a mystery why Nokia would make such an amazingly lame decision in the first place, but even more strange that they never fixed it in later firmwares, because I have found a lot of posts from people complaining about this matter, and asking if it was fixed in new firmwares.
My Sony Ericsson W950 Symbian UIQ3 phone has no problems at all with controlling volume in Java games.
So now I'm back to looking at new models from Sony Ericsson again, and what do we have now? The C905...wee... And once again the manufacturer manages to make an incredible stupid decision: No VGA video recording.
And I'm still not impressed by the picture quality. I don't need 8mp blurry pictures that looks like they're painted with dull colors. I need 5mp sharp ones with great colors.
I do however think, that the C905 will be the overall best phone on the market, all things considered... My experience with Nokia S60v3 tells me that the Sony Ericsson UI is clearly the best. And the missing Java sound in S60v3 is simply a disaster!
So I guess I'll be selling my N82 again soon, and go back to hibernate. Someone wake me up when SE releases a C905 successor that has VGA recording. | |
