@goldenface, my apologies, I didnt want to single you out as against EDGE. Just trying to show it still has benefits.
@Arne, cool thanks for the clarification. I'm Guessing that SE realizes that money can be made by issuing a phone that has EDGE as markets are already established with users demanding quality designed usuable handsets that are bulky to carry around as an alternative to WiFi for modems on laptops or just faster data to the handset. WCDMA is widely available in Europe, agreed, but the demand for its data speeds and services is still subpar compared to the coverage the providers offer it in. I still see it limited to business professionals travelling or needing it currently, however it is coming around. HSPDA/HSUPD is being trialed for almost 9 months already in Isle of Man, as I'm aware of. Beautiful but for me living in Canada; we still have yet to get WCDMA with our bands 850/1900mhz here, which is pittiful. Our provider here, Rogers, launched EDGE last July 1st - National Independence Celebration as a stop gate measure since other purchases were in the line of fire, Fido - the only other GSM provider check, Skydome - Toronto's MLB stadium at dirt cheap pricing check, Purchase auction for new spectrum check, purchased other competing local Cable providers - the small guys are gone check.
So EDGE is still viable for providers without existing licenses outside of Europe and not the population demand for WCDMA.
Arne think you need to take a job as CEO of Rogers' Wireless kick but into getting WCDMA working here ASAP! cheers. |

Has someone formed a 'mib1800 & scotsboyuk Debates Appreciation Society' on Esato?

Found an article bout edge
Two new surveys by GSA - the Global mobile Suppliers Association has found that 96 GSM/EDGE networks, triple the number of 12 months ago, are delivering commercial EDGE-enabled services today in 60 countries.
The breakdown is 38 commercial networks in 26 countries in Europe, 17 in Asia, 32 in 18 countries/territories in the Americas, with the remaining 9 live networks in 7 countries in Africa and the Middle East.
The survey identifies a total of 153 network operators in 85 countries committed to the EDGE upgrade (compared to 106 networks in 64 countries 12 months ago).
The regional split is 60 EDGE network deployments in the Americas, 54 in Europe, 26 in Asia, and 13 in the Middle East and Africa. Many more networks are expected to launch EDGE-enabled commercial services in the coming months.
The GSM/EDGE Devices survey by GSA confirms 143 GSM/EDGE-enabled devices now launched in the market, from 23 suppliers. More than 110 GSM/EDGE-enabled devices have been launched in the past 12 months.
GSA also confirms that 48 operators are now operating or deploying combined EDGE-WCDMA networks. |

Thanks for that 786KBR.
I would imagine more EDGE enabled handsets around the corner but also more 3G. Miles Flint said in an interview -
“Having established a profitable base and a reputation for quality, innovation and design in 2004, this year will see us expand our product portfolio and challenge the market once again with new thinking and stunning designs” said Miles Flint. “3G will also become increasingly important as the year progresses” he continued, “although 3G sales amounted to less than 5 percent of the overall market in 2004, we expect this segment to come close to 10 percent of overall volumes during the year with further rapid expansion in 2006.”
Like someone else posted previously, I think it is a good idea to include more data options in the UK.
I think all mid-range handsets now should have either 3G, EDGE or both, I mean, it is not as if the operators don't make money on data usage is it?

| I guess that you dont own a laptop then. If you do then if there is an outtage or lack of coverage of 3G do you want to drop down to 140-230kbps download (EDGE) or to just 26-43.6kbps download (GPRS)??!!!! Thats your perogative.
Hmm Arne, another SE phone with EDGE. Vodafone France & Orange France which BOTH already have 3G for some time have deployed EDGE network support; but its not the future or doesnt need to be deployed? Guessing that certain markets dont agree with you. |

I still think SE should have given EDGE to the 'cutting edge' P990. But let me not go to deep into this - before Brix will 'shoot' me down. My next cell (N80) does have it and that's important. :-)

@mario: Why do you always have to take a stab at SE? I mean no-one here attacks your beloved Nokia with the venom you've reserved for SE.
