While the camera is much better in the P1, I wonder if it's good enough to replace a standalone digital camera?

Concerning "much better" - can you prove that somehow ? I'd love to see two shots of the same object ( kind of book with small text ) made by P990 and P1 respectively, with selftimer on to prevent hands trembling. Then I could compare. Currently I have no big confidence in that claim ( that P1 camera is much more better than one P990 has )

We may have to wait until the P1 is released for that one
I have owned the ... T68i T610, P800, P900, P910, P990, W950, P1, W960 But SE have now totally lost the plot.

Yes, but for now I guess the assumption that P1 camera is better than P990 stems from the fact that both are SE manufactured (basically similar quality which is the constant) and 3.2mp P1 is no doubt bigger than 2mp P990 (which is the variable)

Fair point, but it was only meant as a light hearted comment

Of course you can be right, but take in consideration that similar assumption about P990 vs P910i does not work well, though both made by same manufacturer and in theory P990 is far ahead in hardware.

So I'd prefer to wait for test shots, then I can judge.

Talking about "P910 vs P990" I meant phones in general

You think? Seems to me, the only idiots around here are the ones dissing the M600/P1 keyboard without having used it to any great degree. If they had, they'd know that it wipes the floor with most other solutions, including the P990's "full" qwerty alternative.

If you're looking for the ultimate one-handed UIQ3 experience, it already exists in the M600 - not the P990. The "one handed" flip closed mode on the P990 is a fraud - an affectation made necessary only by the deliberately difficult-to-use fullscreen mode. In the M600 (and P1) you have a full screen mode available 24/7 that can be used one-handed without any need for a flip...

@Boinng

According to my experience P990 without flip is fully functional for one hand usage. It took me a while to get used to it but now everything is super and I definitely don't want the flip any more. Saying that I believe that P1 is even better for one hand usage since it is smaller and I am sure half qwerty behave good after some practice. Only real shortcoming for me is smaller screen. I compared P990 with W950 and the difference in screen size is obvious.

Well, thank you all for the input. It was quite invaluable and made my decision on whether or not to get the P990 easy. I FINALLY got it a week and a half ago, YAY! Unfortunately, I got the Singapore generic version which while it has english, always popped up simplified chinese in applications - rather frustrating! As a previous P910 owner who had debranded his phone from the Orange software, I did a similar thing with the P990 to world generic 1. So now it has R6D23 firmware! I only experienced R5A17 for a couple of days before upgrading.

My experience to date has been mindblowing. This experience is clearly enhanced as I am coming from a P910. The screen is amazing, camera exquisite. The business card reader has wowed people and earned me serious kudos! I have installed a number of applications to date and the memory leaks are not too bad especially with Swiss Manager Pro cleaning up idle applications and reclaiming memory in the background.

I am sure the P1 will be amazing as will be the REAL P990 replacement but for the price I paid and given that SE does not always deliver on time, I think the P990 is a great phone - especially with the latest firmware, bugs and all!
If it is to be it is up to me!

It is like a surreal walk down memory lane looking at posts from 18 years ago!

Yup. It is like that.

I had a bitter moment as a P990 owner and it was because I got it stolen while on a bus. But it was awesome.

As luck would have it I stumbled upon my P910 whose battery has expanded and cannot obviously work anymore. I am now trying to find a replacement to take a walk down memory lane
