Where have all the newbies come from? |

Well, I reckon some questions can get a little annoying. Remember the time with the plethora of threads asking the same question ; "K800 or W850?".
Yeah, I'd wish some people would use the search function a little more, but people come here for advice. The best thing to do is to just answer the question, but also alert the poster to the fact that there is a search facility and kindly remind them that they do have a mind of their own to reason out some simple logic.
Still, some people just aren't as adept at dealing with phones as we are, so perhaps just remember that instead of assuming that, instead of labeling everyone as 12 y.o. children.
Reminds me of the time when someone thought that a sticky left on standby was a case of screen damage or a friend's hacking of the phone. Instead of saying "wtf, it's a sticky ya @#$^", just reason it nicely.

I joined esato over a year ago and what i thought was one of it's best features compared to other forums was the fact that apart from the usual exchange of information you would have experts or sort of experts teaching newbies like me a lot of new things, showing us a new world that until then was hidden, the underground world of sony ericsson and phone technology in general. I felt very welcomed and happy to actually be able to see the pictures in the different threads that i could not see before, because i was an unregistered newbie.
My point is Newbies are as equally inportant to a Forum as Expert members, specially to a forum like esato that holds this particular relationship to SE and that bases most of its credibility and recognition in their statistics. Imagine how esato will dry to death like a lot of forums out there, if you did not have us, the newbies.
So @GUY_H it is very sad to see that an esato member can be such an arrogant f**k thinking he knows it all and thinking newbies are retarded. The sad thing of it is that thinking that way is actually more retared and inmature than posting a stupid question.
@moderators
a FAQ section would be awesome and should be well advertised aswell, and please try to work a little harder on the search engine coz it is a pain to use it. example some time ago i could not find a thread that could help me solve a blogging problem altough i searched in many different ways, and when i tried searching in another forum before posting the question as a ew topic, i found it at first. and i am sure esato has the answer somewhere. implementing the search on tittles is a good idea.

@scots..., well said - have ony 1 thing to add (again... My original post was "lost" when the thread got moved): the original poster started all of this in the "symbian thread" - the irony... How "symbian", eh, smart is that! Surely only a nOOb would do that! enough now...

The flaw in the original post, in my opinion, is that it doesn't recognise one of the fundamentals of forums i.e. n00bs will post things that more established members think stupid. It's what tends to happen on forums and there isn't a huge amount that can be done about it. You can make information easy to access, etc, but there will likely still be some people who don't see it/bother to read it, etc.
One simply has to be patient and help the n00b. Whilst doing so one can impart how to find information on one's own to reduce the frequency of repeated questions.

but the flaw in that philiosophy is that one (us) has to assume that one (the noobie) will read one's (the poster's) post in order to obtain one's (the poster's) knowledge to do what one (the poster) is suggesting!

They have to read one's post if they want one's answer to their question.

lol, yes, but as you previously said, they have to know to read (or search) in order to find such posts to get such info, and thats where it all falls down to human nature when they simply want to get their question answered
many non forum literate types simply post their question assuming thats how they get their answer
there is no way in this world, despite being given hints and rules of the forum during signup, that we can make people do these things that forum etiqutte requires of them, and to be harsh on them in their first posts is not really the answer

I'm not sure you quite get what I mean. If someone asks a question that has been asked umpteen times before, once can simply answer it for them, and provide advice on how to obtain such information in the future. It may do bugger all good of course, but some may take notice.

Indeed, there are some people who just pop on a forum once to ask a question and perhaps don't understand the etiquette of a particular forum. As you say there is little point in barking at them, it probably won't stop the next n00b from doing the exact same thing, and may result in the person being put off visiting again.

is there an option to search for text included in the topic title only - instead of actual posts? if there is then i cant see it and if there isn't then maybe there should be?
I recently requested this of laffen so fingers crossed that we'll see it soon
@masseur, while we're still talking about the search function, I'd like to know if it's possible to implement a search function that only searches within a thread. This would be useful for those really long threads that span tens or hundreds of pages. Please correct me if there's already such a function.

I'm not aware of what you have suggested but...
as a work around for now, you can bookmark the thread and then in the search tick the "bookmarks only" box and change the "view results as" to "posts"
this works best, of course, with the fewer bookmarks you have but will still yield better results than searching a whole forum

Yup, I've been doing that actually, but it just occurred to me that it may actually be a good idea to have such a search function. Thanks for the tip anyway, masseur. I hope it helps the others who weren't aware they could do that.
