Someone here said he lives his life by the bible. Then, according to him we are all damned sinners and will burn in the fires of hell.

he's a religious nutcase I'm afraid to say.

Everyone sins. no-one is perfect. Who is the real sinner; the borrower or the lendor? We do what we need to survive and feel a bit of happiness and security.

If we sin, it is to learn what sin is. In knowing we can overcome. In ignorance we are ruled by others forever.

@max - would you say that drug-taking is not a sin until say that person then starts stealing, and mugging people in the street for money to buy drugs? For me it then becomes a sin. If someone wants to f*ck up their life with drugs but be able to pay for it all themselves then it's their lookout, but it they've lied, robbed, cheated and beaten people up in the process it is a sin?

@Blue - good point on guilt. In some ways I can see a person whose killed another person, and gotten away with it could feel worse that if he'd been caught. He would carry the guilt around for the rest of his life, and it will never be far from his thoughts.

Sammy_boy, we all have free choice. If someone steals to support a drug habit, it is still the stealing that is the sin, not the drug taking.
But we also excercise human compassion, and recognise that some people are weaker than others. It's a sin to steal, but that isn't an invitation to hate or hurt another person. To not forgive is as much a sin as stealing. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone...

Many people with drug habits never steal. Only a small proportion end up so addicted they steal to maintain their habit.

I wasn't saying that all that take drugs steal. Though I do agree that if someone does take drugs, but doesn't harm anyone else in doing it then it isn't a sin, it's their life and if they choose to kill themselves doing it then it's their business and right.

Though it could be argued that it's hurting their loved ones, like parents, partners or children, and by them losing a loved one, or parent it is a sin as it affects those people and 'harms' them.

i'm half-expecting someone to start talking about "necessary evil" in a minute

oh I do believe that it is a sin to harm oneself, but "harm" is a flexible concept. If you harm yourself and learn from it, then it benefits the sum total of human knowledge. If you hurt yourself but refuse to learn from it, then that is a sin. If you hurt yoursef to avoid facing up to something, that is a sin.

But a "sin" isn't something that should set a person aside from their fellows. We all sin everyday. Everyone lies, everyone cheats sometimes, most people have stolen something sometime in their life. EVERY SINGLE PERSON has done something they regret. A sin is not something you do against god, but against your self and your own integrity.

The biggest sin is to hate yourself or another for sinning.
