I don't have an mp3 capable minidisc (mine's an original NetMD unit) but I do have the HBM30 Bluetooth handsfree and MP3/ATRAC player from SE. I have had the opportunity to compare both atrac and mp3 tracks encoded for the HBM30 and can hear the sound difference clearly.
Unless I use crappy MDLP4, I can fit more MP3's on a memory card than ATRAC tracks. It doesn't support AAC unfortunantly.
And by using MP3's I was able to drag and drop files from my music collection (which then was all MP3), whereas using ATRAC I had to use the god aweful openmg software (or marginally better, sonic stage), and transfers where dog slow, as it involved on the fly conversion. That's AFTER importing the tracks into OpenMG, where they are (slowly) converted from MP3 to encrypted ATRAC (.omg files).

Guys,
i am in the middle of creating a itunes plugin for the w800i but i am looking to gauge need/want from users.
I have currently got the program using a playlist as the phone link, when you move files into the playlist the pluggin copies it to the phone. in the right format and directory structure. i am also looking to use a drm dropper to allow people to move purchase music to the phone as well.
the software was started about three hours ago so it is nowhere near bullet proof.
what i am looking for is any features that you would like to see |

Maybe this thread is dead but I just wanted to post my solution.
I am also using a Roku Soundbridge and had intended on using WMA with Yahoo Music Unlimited. However, I couldn't resist the W800.
So, my plan is to rip all my CDs into FLAC - which is a free lossless codec. Then I'll have all my music protected from the ebbs and tides of the format wars.
However, I won't listen to anything directly from FLAC. I'll write a script to nightly transcode any new FLAC files into AAC (mp4 actually - I found out the hardway that the W800 doesn't handle AAC directly). And I'll use iTunes as the server for my Soundbridge.
Then, whenever I want to put music on my phone, I'll just plug the phone in and drag and drop.
Then, in a year or two when someother format becomes the de-facto standard, I'll just change the script to make whatever format that is.
So about that script... | |
