it depend on your application management at a time?
512Mb is more than enough for mid-end phone
if you can't make it right how much you have is never enough

I never really run more than 2 or 3 apps at once on any phone. I don't need to

Does anyone else have trouble getting the home screen to landscape mode without flipping the keypad out? - Sorry if this has already been addressed. |

That's because it only goes to landscape with keypad open

I realise that, but why only when kepad open? - I just cant help but think sometimes the accelerometer is faulty. Just feels incomplete. |

With the latest OS update on the 2011 series, there is much more efficient app management. I've seen a marked improvement - my phone used to lag with less than 80Mb ram now it runs as smooth as butter with a lot less and I have some big ass apps running.
Now, with the latest update I hardly need to worry about what apps I have running. Google certainly know what they're doing.

That's weird. According to phonearena both phones should come equipped with 512mb of RAM. Yet, when I run the quick system info app. it tells me that the phone's equipped with 335 mb of ram, and when I check the "running services" section of the phone the numbers add up to 317mb total. Am I missing something, or is shortselling the public?
Sorry for being so paranoid, it's just that memory managment is kinda important to me since I like my apps to have their breathing room. |

Yes I use Opera. The ram is the same on all handsets. And yea you cam use Opera in landscape. They show the amount of ram plus the amount available to the user.

Sorry for being slow, but are you saying that the 335mb of ram I'm seeing on my phone is the amount of "allowed" memory to be used by apps? If that's the case, and my phone does come equipped with 512mb, where's the remaining 177mb? |

I'm not familiar with the actual RAM usage of Android, but on most computer systems, the OS will allocate RAM for the system (this is usually hidden from the user, so this may be the missing 177MB), then background tasks, running apps, then free RAM.
The 300+ MB RAM you see may be FREE RAM, and the other 300+ may be RAM in use... since this fluctuates faster on mobile devices than on full systems so you may see discrepancies on total amounts unless you have a memory app than can show you actual (live) usage statistics of your memory.

It's the same with a pc. Look at your pc ram it will show 2.75 gigs byte out of 3 gigs byte of ram. In a phone I think the 177mb missing is the system usage. It's not just SE phones. Samsung Galaxy S 2 says out of the gig of ram it has 870 or so is available.

If the graphic chip uses shared memory (most likely), then part of the RAM will be used for the graphic chip and hence no being available for apps.
