I don't know what it stands for (but I know how the push icon looks, and it isn't the one your picture is showing), I only know how to disable it... along with some other annoying icons that operators use the wrong off signal for. The problem for operators is that the off signal seems different for different phones. Vodafone, for example, turns the fax icon off properly on Nokia phones, but not Ericsson phones. They also fail turning it on properly if there is a voice mail before recieving a fax while icon notification is turned on instead of text message alert.

It's pretty complicated... just switch sim cards and you're fine

Why are some people here talking about a fax icon? I thought no SE phones were able to send or receive faxes...

Well, if you subscribe to a fax-mailbox along with your voicemail, then people can send faxes to you using a special number that your operator assign to you. When you recieve a fax, it's stored at your operator. Then your operator notifies you that you have a fax. This can be done in two different ways: 1) You recieve an sms telling you there is a fax waiting 2) You get a so called icon notification. The latter means that the fax icon is turned on in the phones display and the sms sound plays. From there you can call your voicemail and redirect the fax to a machine of your own choice, or, you can view your fax on the computer by logging in to your inbox.

So, this discussion about "fax" has nothing to do with the fact that some SE phones can't send/recieve faxes since they lack fax capability.

However, the discussion is about the fact that some operators who use features that turns some special icons on/off in the phones display simply send the wrong signal which means the icons stay on forever. A technician told me that there is a simple way to cure this for those who suffer from the problem with an icon that doesn't go away: Take the sim card out. Insert another sim card and turn the phone on for a few minutes. Then insert the first sim card again - icons gone Of course the fax needs to be either viewed or deleted before the fax icon is supposed to go away, which means that before you do the above trick you have to make sure the icon is supposed to be turned off. Switching sim cards while the fax is still unread doesn't turn the icon off since it's actually still supposed to be turned on. It's when some operators send the "off" signal that things go wrong which makes the icon stay on screen forever and this is when the above trick cures the problem.

Just for the record: The above discussion about "fax" is just an example. The problem goes for many more icons and is also solved with the same trick.

Btw, I actually wrote about this subject two or three years ago here at esato...

Sorry to say, but I think you have a phone with faulty firmware.

I had the exactly the same problem with mo old Z1010. Only way to fix it is to get a new one (return it to the seller) or to flash it with the latest firmware.

NOOOoooo! It's not a faulty firmware! Just swap sim cards and it's fixed! Problem is that not even som service centers/technicians understand what it's all about. It's a wrong signal from the operator that makes the icon not go away from the screen. You had your phone replaced just because the people who looked at it didn't know that all they had to do was to swap sim cards temporary.

I've finally tried the SIM swapping trick...

1. When I power on my phone with my friend's SIM, the weird icon is gone!!!

2. But when I swapped back with my SIM, the logo's back up!!!!!

Maybe I didn't wait long enough before I swapped back with my SIM? I waited about 2 mins. Or there's something wrong with my SIM?

Here's the situation. When you insert a new sim, the icon is gone because the operator for that sim doesn't send a signal to turn that icon on for that subsription... when you insert your first sim card, the icon returns because the operator keep sending a signal to turn that icon on...

As you can see, there's nothing wrong with your phone. If there where something wrong with it, then the icon would be turned on even with the other sim card in your phone. Your problem is that the operator turns the icon on by sending a special signal through the network. Call your operator and ask them to restart your subscription in their system.

(If the operator had turned the icon on and then sent the wrong signal trying to turn it off afterwards, then the icon would be gone when doing the sim swap trick... unfortunatly, in your case, the operator keep sending the on signal.)

Thanks CyberVisitor, I think i've got it figured.

Since I had my SIM (few years ago), my network introduced new services which are only available on a new type of SIM (called SIM2). and Since I am still on the old version SIM, I cannot access those new services, even though the network is broadcasting/using that signal to all users. Maybe my K500i's weird icon is indicating that I cannot access these services instead of completly ignoring the signal.

I guess I will upgrade my SIM soon. (they charge $$$, otherwise I would've done it ages ago!)

@simple-d

1) The important thing here is that the test proved there's nothing wrong with your phone

2) My operator provided me with a new sim card for free when I told them the old one wasn't working as it should (my phone often complained about a bad sim when powering the phone on)
