i think the last few posts have missed a vital point, its not SONYERICSSON and samsung that joined forces, its SONY and samsung. |

@ Miss UK,
from what i can gather the S65 isnt that expensive anymore, and its still a damned good handset from what i can tell! 1.3mp cam, bt, rs-mmc, email, web. and all in a siemens UI which has all the normal qualities of a siemens handset, like being able to upgrade the sw online (siemens hasve always done this) and the fact that you can customise the 1-9 key to set it to whatever function you want! i dont know of any other make that can do that?
C'mon SE, how about a partnership with siemens??

i sure hope so bobafett.
If Nokia/Ericsson and Motorola? can come up with Symbian, why the hell on earth should they not all put there ideas in to one big pot and see what they come up with?
id be happy, if i only saw one new handset every 2 months as long as the quality and features were up to scratch.
im just scared of what 3.5/4G will bring to the table, if 3G can invade our privacy so much what will 4G do to us?

@Nature
I wasn't missing that point at all, the agreement as I read it includes each company's subsidiaries, and since Sony has a stake in Sony Ericsson this would presumably mean that SE will be able to benefit from this deal too.

Ok, I read all of these posts, and then went back and read the first paragraph of the press release. As one persone correctly pointed out, this is a cross-license agreement between Sony and Samsung, not a partnership or merger of any sort and has nothing to do with mobile phones. Sony and Samsung are two of the largest electronics manufacturing corporations in the WORLD! Anyone badmouthing this announcement is not thinking because it means higher quality and more affordable electronics to us. They both make a hell of a lot more than phones, and surely phones are a miniscule part of their product portfolios! Sony Ericsson was a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson purely for the purpose of making mobile phones. Unless they have some sort of agreement soon to expire, you can bet that there's no way in hell Ericsson is going to let mobile phones be a part of this new deal. Also, it's not like they would do this because Samsung wants Bluetooth on their phones and SE wants.....whatever Samsung's good at... Anybody can put these features in their phones, it just comes down to who can manufacture and/or procure the components, assembly, distribution, marketing, etc. cheaply enough to make their phones competitive. Samsung could have had BT on their phones several years ago but if they cost $100 more than competitive phones with comparable features nobody would buy them, thus, they didn't include it in the specs. |

I can see where motos headed, not seeing much non 3g stuff from them anymore and as for SE and Nokia, well Nokia will keep releasing as masny handsets as they can, as long as there are places like the phillipines to buy them, nokia will release them! and SE, well i wouldnt like to say where they are headed. hopefully for much greater things. im just very very dissapoited in them recently, which is why ive moved onto Samsung, SPV and back to Nokia,
I just feel nothing has improved since the T68i, what real improvment is there in the K700i from the T68i?? i cant think of any tbh. but hey thats my 2penneth worth!

@fatreg
I don't quite see your point, there have been numerous improvements since the T68i; integrated cameras, better screens, more memory, video capture, better games, etc. Then there are smartphones, a major innovation.
What improvements did you want to see exactly?

T68 had a cam, had email, had [BT], had a colour screen, has wap,
granted innovations is technology have given us better colour screens, video camera etc. but i feel theres been no real leap forward. ive been working in the mobile business for 4 years now and the only real step ive seen is the step from mono to colour screen,
smartphones are no real improvement either, how old is the Nokia 9110?? im actually using my Nokia 6310i atm, im fed up of all this camera nonsense, why have phones stopped being phones? i know companies make more money from people sending pics etc. but how come i can on one hand count the amount of phones that dont have cameras? i just feel that all the big guns just want our money, buy releasing bang/bang/bang after each other new handsets, T610/T630?? what was the point? P900/P910i? whats the point?? maybe im just a pessimist but surely im not the only one that feels that the true art of making a MOBILE TELEPHONE has been overlooked here??
rant over!

Fatreg,
A bit off-topic, but I see your point. Nothing real significant has happened to mobile phones in the last two years, but that is because they have the "phone" part of mobile phones down. They don't have a whole lot of improvements to make as far as phones go. Sure, they are still making improvements as they will continue to do, but the "rest" of "mobile phone technology" (screens, batteries, cameras, etc) has been growing extremely rapidly (mostly due to marketing I'm sure). So, while there isn't really anything groundbreaking that a manufacturer could bring to the mobile phone market, they have to keep coming out with new models simply to stay competitive. For instance, if SE didn't come out with any new phones for the next two years, there really wouldn't be anything on the market that would work better than the K700, and it would still be a great phone, but if you looked around at the other phones on the market Nokia would have one with a 7MP camera, and Motorola would have one with a battery that lasts a month, and Samsung would have one with no buttons that just reads your mind (ok, I'm going overboard here). But you see what I mean? It's these little refinements that are no big leap to us consumers but are absolutely necessary to the manufacturer in order to stay competitive in the market. |
