I just wish we'd give Northern Ireland back to the Irish, it would solve a lot of problems. However, it would also create problems.

I dont really take much notice of political issues, but apparently if Northern Ireland was taken back by the Irish, it would put the Irish economy into serious trouble. So even if the Irish people want it back, their government dont.

Thats generally what i saw on tv some years back.

No matter how you could define what makes a country a country, i'll always class England, Wales and Scotland as seperate countries.

Yes, but Scotland and England ARE countries whereas Wales is not. However you look at it, the UK is merely the 51st state of the US. :-(

Why is Wales not a country ?

Even if it were governed by the English parliament, it still has its own borders, rights, laws, and sports teams etc.

I've always thought of the USA as a large English county, rather than Britain as an American state.

I don't know why Wales isn't a country but it isn't and never has been. I blame the Romans.

Brits and their mess!
They don't even concur on what's a country, a nation, a kingdom, an empire...

Well, Portugal is a country (it has the most ancient defined borders of all european countries) which once had an empire with colonies. Period. Brasil (and many other colonies) was part of a Portuguese Empire, simple as that.
No "Great Lusitania" or "United Portuguese Kingdom" or any other political division for that matter. [addsig]

Actually going back on myself... England is a (administrative and parliamentary) division of the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The United Kingdom of Great Britain is officially a Country. The fact that the United Kingdom is part of the name is descriptive in that it explain that the each division is united by a single sovereignty.

I hope this explains it more clearly. How this relates to sports and why we have 4 seperate teams, I have no idea.

so Brits prefer their country UK or GB?

@Jowi - you'll find neither for the majority! - I'm very proud of my roots and would say I'm from Geordie-land, although not strictly true

interestingly, the entire UK competes as a single country in the Olympic Games, but in the Commonwealth Games the separate nations compete individually (i.e. as constituents of the British Commonwealth).
