VOIP - Voice over IP; a technology allowing wired and unwired networks to offer telephony services by converting voice to data.
Advancements in VOIP has lowered the cost of long-distance calls while offering the same voice quality as traditional telcos. (Hence the refusal of local telcos to allow ISPs to offer VOIP services to the public. they claim that such a service would require them a national franchise based on an old philippine telecommunications law. in the meantime, the NTC dilly-dallies on the policies affecting VOIP technologies in the PH)

@GOwin, I second that. From what I hear, wi fi seems to be the way to go. Studies by international telecom analysts are more bullish on wi-fi development in phones rather than 3g .

if you are using a cdma fone and you want to change your unit, will it change numbers too? or you will retain your old number?
ano kaya itsura ng cdma fone? katulad ng mga fone na ginagamit ngayon ng extelcom?
im using extelcom line for calls..kc unlimited calls, pero base sa experience ko sa network nila, every time na may kausap ka sa line eh biglang may sisingit and mag sabi na pagamit naman ng line. may party line yata sila, and connection sucks... siguro nakaka 10 dials kana..di kapa nakaka contact sa tinatawagan mo....
mobiline used cdma before using kyocera fones.. pero di nag click... coz of the gsm fones... tingin kaya ng extelcom, kung i revive nila ang cdma after 10 years na wala sa business eh maka catch up sila sa GSM?
siguro po kung ginawa nila yan when smart started using GSM, kc sa pag kakakaalam ko doon talaga nag boom ang GSM sa pinas

3G deployment would be expensive. It's highly dubious if it can offer GPRS services at rates lower than it is now.
WLANs would offer cheaper data connections (vs mobile) albeit limited coverages. |

Thailand. www.hutch.co.th if you want to see the handsets. It's pretty cheap. 2 Baht per minute.

One thing is certain. Anyone who will put up a WCDMA/3G network must be terribly rich and has the guts to face the three biggest (and richest) companies in the Philippines - the Ayala Group, the PLDT (First Pacific) group and the Gokongwei group. Hmmm.. will it be the Lopezes? the Yuchengcos? Lucio Tan? Henry Sy? who else?
One must have enough CAPEX to rollout WCDMA in the country considering the diversity of the Philippine islands. |

oh yes!!! even after 3 years, Extelcom is still determined to compete with Smart-Piltel, Globe, and Sun.
After all, most of the marketing ideas used by these 3 GSM operators are pioneered by Extelcom.
As for us, the consumers, all we could do is pray hard that Extelcom would find someone who is willing to invest the much needed money to start-up a "high-tech" CDMA2000 digital network. One that would compete head-on with the other 3 GSM networks.
Don't expect Bayantel to be a part of this since the Lopezes have their own mind about certain things.
Anyways, once the CDMA2000 network is set-up, we could expect VERY MINIMAL "Network Busy" scenarios (so we could REALLY ENJOY unlimited calling and texting [yahoo!!!]), faster mobile Internet, and best of all, VIDEO CALLS!!!
