Invision powerboard looks nicer than phpBB, but it builds much larger databases. Also it has a funny way to quote (unpleasant to use). I think overall phpBB is better. I agree with philtheman btw

I think the best forum software is vBulletin. Here's a sample:

http://www.howardforums.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=37

Its fast, lots of useful features and you can attach files to your posts. What do you think of vBulletin?

But whether to upgrade or not, I don't really mind either way. But if we DON'T upgrade, dont complain that newbies don't use the search to find answers to common questions. The current search function is...frustrating!

So...
All these techy people that almost live in this forum don't want to change?
Aren't these people the same that exchange phone every 3 month almost? What's wrong with those phones? They still work don't they?
Like somene said earlier "If it's not broke, don't fix it"...

C'mon, if the forum changes, surely it'll be better. No one develops something worse than the previous version.
Probably you won't notice many improvements, but maybe for the mods it'll be easier to mod, and for the admins (hi laffen) it'll be easier to admin.

Why not creating a "paralell" forum (a replica from this one) so people can say: "This is sh*t! Go back to previous version." or "This is great! Forget the old format".
There could be polls and other stuff like that.
What do you think about it laffen? [addsig]

I think the howardforums software is crappy cuz you cant see the new post and it have a bad layout. There is just to much. When you try to log in and is whrithing the wrong pasword or something the software wont tell you that you have been whriting wrong it just came with a empty screen.

Esato layout is the best, have good looking and functionality. The only thing that bothers me is the search.

An 'upgrade' to vBulletin will result in a loss of all data, so we'll have to stick with phpBB (which is the best imo). The forum style can remain the same, it's just the forum 'software' that should be updated.

Normally it's just running a database update script and replacing some files, but I think laffen modified the files alot... Hard to tell

he did. And then there is the not so small matter of running a parallel xhtml, wml and 'stripped html' forums that possibly need to be linked all anew. And there is the matter of the current server being replaced coz the load is too high.......

Thhink the man has enough on his hands to keep him busy for quite a while.

Vlammetje > as long as there are no MySQL database table changes involved in an upgrade, the 'extra' forums won't need any change. They don't really need an update btw.

I am waiting for Dell to deliver the new MySQL (database) server, and will start moving the current data over as soon as the hardware and software is installed. The new server is faster than the current one and will have a newer version of MySQL installed. The new version has built in text search capabilities, which will ease the forum search. Because of the fulltext search, I will have to modify the table structure.

@Vlammetje
Yes, one of the main reasons why I not have evaluated a forum upgrade is because of the extra WAP, XHTML, and mobile.Esato.com versions I have made. And additions like “Posts last 24 hours”, “Forum top 20”, “Posted from a T300” and phone avatars is not part of the standard phpBB features.

The forum will be updated in the future, but it is not on top of my list at the moment.
