Cont...water about how it imposed these limits, in that it failed to tell people that their tariff had been changed, of course this meant people ran up astonishing bills. Genie was featured on Watchdog twice regarding the matter, the 2nd time this American managing director dude can on and claimed that everyone had been told.

@@@@@gahanfan - you may wanna check this on your phone, as you say u check ur e-mails. go to >>> Messages >>>4.e-mail >>> 7.options >>> 2.edit account >>> click on the data account u use for e-mail >>> then at the bottom is check interval >>> select off.

If you have gprs you can configure your handset to check youe e-mail account every 5mins!!!! thus charging you.

Had a customer at work moaning at me cos he had £70 gprs charges & he used this facilty. Just an idea as your charges sound high & you say you dont use it that much (we all say that though) [addsig]

Orangeman the 'check interval' option has been set to 'off' since I got the phone.

I honestly and truly DON'T use the phone gprs excessively.....I check email every day (headers only), there are usually only 2 or 3 new
messages, and even then I use the pc every day so urgent I usually just go online on the pc to reply....

Anyway this thread was not about how much I PERSONALLY use.....just how much I am charged for using it........Especially as I (wrongly) asumed most other uk users were charged more or less the same as me. I was astounded at the differences between networks, and a bit pissed off to find myself paying 3-4 times the price for the same data volume.......

Hmmm £4 pound a MB is not really a bargain in my book, those kind of prices will keep mobile data in the doldrums.
Imagine if the wired net cost that much, an mp3 would cost £12 to download.
When are the idiots at theses companies going to realise that no-one is impressed with the fact that it's mobile, and don't try and sting us to repay your ridiculous debts.
Buy an 02 pay-go online and get 300mins free GPRS

Sadly it is right, my last t-mobile phone bill i was charged 55 quid for gprs data. I even have the 10mb for 20 quid bundle but somehow managed to run a huge bill up like that. I'm not impressed with t-mobile, they are too expensive. My lowest monthly bill with them so far has been 90 quid. Last months has set me back 165!

GPRS is not exactly free in France. The only thing that's free is WAP, not GPRS. They seem to consider using GPRS as your PDA option which I happened to not freaking know and end up getting a 80 Euro phone bill for that month. Although, the free WAP is great, but it's so damn slow. I was using Orange France by the way.

@bigjobs - if i know im gunna download a big file - I will take the risk & use csd - ok not guranteed connection - it's slower - if it gets cut off i have to start over again etc etc & will probably work out cheaper (or high speed @25p per min if im feelin rich) - I use wap to check e-mails as I have £4 per month 'unlimited wap access' & chose e-mail providers accessible via web & wap.

But yeh - 1mb for £4 is excessive - I totally agree - on orange contract gprs is £1.50 per mb on the higher bundles after they have been used - which is great value compared to the other UK nets & a bit better value - I think ud agree

@all - I though everyone here would also investigate what there gunna be charged before using something aswell - thats obvious, isnt it?? [addsig]

I just read this thread again & remembered that my old t68 had a data counter that could be set back to zero every month, it's a good idea to keep an eye on it.
Hopefully GPRS will come down in price soon,
BTW someone told me that when Orange first introduced pre pay acount phones they charged £1 a minute for normal calls to landlines.
