I find it hard to believe that UIQ apps have a particularly bright future. UIQ itself is dead, there aren't going to be any new UIQ phones, which means the market for any future UIQ apps is now rapidly diminishing as UIQ owners move on to new pastures. What little revenue their might have been will dry up, it's inevitable.

Boinng, you are right. Not all my actions are entirely driven by money.

We already have some superb UIQ phones - the manufacturers just want us to shell out on something new to give them more of our money!

There are a huge amount of excellent programmes out there already to work with these current phones. Some excellent stuff from CPS and other developers. CPS also provide some brilliant completely free software such as the ubiquitous Swiss Manager There are also loads of free stuff provided by hackers of the UIQ system - so we can have most of the new stuff on the most powerful recent phones...

If there is something you specifically need - ask on the forums There is a weath of information people love to share You could buy a s/h high tech UIQ3 phone for peanuts on ebay or somewhere and turn it into almost whatever you want...

If you don't want touchscreen then obviously you have a lot more manufacturers to choose from

That's pretty well said, arvinlad, except perhaps...

a huge amount of excellent programmes

...which might be a little bit of exaggeration.

Depends on your definition of 'huge' I suppose

Perhaps we should make a list - we might surprise ourselves...

Frankly, considering the time i intend to keep using my P1 (1 year max), the existing library, and all the mods/hacks that keep appearing, i will be pretty satisfied with new version of Gdesk, CPS stuff and the evolution of the awesome Opera Mobile 9.5. No problems with the end of UIQ.

I guess my post was more aimed at the poster (on the first page) wondering whether to buy a new W960 or not. I think if you're just about to embark on a new 18 month contract or whatever on a brand new smartphone, there's probably better options available than a UIQ handset with fading support.

Hi Zed,

Not being perfect is very true for UIQ3 - and also for any other platform, including women

Actually I think Lisa@CPS probably *is* perfect

(pauses for nostalgia moment)

I really don't care what my OS is as long as it does its job.

In related news, UIQ has put all its remaining staff on notice, according to this article on AAS. This news essentially heralds the end point of the UIQ platform.

Another 270 jobs added to the pool of 1.2M job cuts around the world this year (according to CNN), with 800K in the past 3 months alone. Tough times indeed.

UIQ is dead because the user end of it was non existent, not the developer. SO i think what the user thinks is more important. I used UIQ for 2 months and IMO coming from 2 years of S60 i think UIQ was garbage.

User end was non existent because very few application developers dedicated time to write programs for UIQ3, due to some strange restrictions by patent holders. Inevitably, any platform that does not have the support of developers will loose its end users and eventually fail.
The case is just the opposite for UIQ/UIQ3 users, switching over to S60 is like getting off a horse and getting on a donkey
If you want good synchronizing/backup/restore and proper function of available features, then iPhone is the phone for you. But as a tech savvy end user, I would never use an iPhone as my primary device, I find it too restrictive with a lot of crucial features missing.
Currently I use an HTC Touch HD, its WM 6.1 and I'm quite happy with it. Had UIQ3 not been put to rest, I would have stuck with it, still have and use my P1 and P990. In a perfect world, a new device based on P990 would have come to market, with faster processor and more memory but we do not live in a perfect world.
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD
