Sony Ericsson Issues Profit Warning(Updated) |

Let us do some flashback...
K700, W800, K800, T650, K750, W850... That time, SE use more advanced technology than the others... That was obviously SONY's technology. Their (SONY's) "motto": Anti-Future technology. Which means, no matter how much new mobile phones from other manufacturers are realeased, their pruducts still stand strong.
But now, it looks like SE lose the power from SONY... Ericsson must learn more from SONY's technology...
Oh, FYI, Before i use W910 as my phone i was using K700i since the first time it realeased, and still running well until now (my brother uses it) without any single services. Isn't that amazing?
come on SE!! Get serious!! |

I really don't get where people get this idea that SE have ever been lead by "Sony technology". The sorry truth is that Sony has leant a few brandnames only (Walkman, Cybershot etc) - the idea that inside any of these phones there's ever been any special Sony know-how is utterly false.
The great phones that SE built itself on in the early days? All based on Ericsson technology, from the P800 downwards. The P800 was really the pinnacle of everything Ericsson were involved in, from Bluetooth to UIQ, all born in their R&D departments. All Sony provided there was a stupid insistence on using their Memory Stick, and all the limitations and delays that brought. All the other classics of that era - the T610, etc - were all Ericsson born and bred, and set the template for everything that came later. In fact, to this day you can draw a straight line between the UI and technology of, say, the T68 (a phone even released by Ericsson before the JV) and the latest W910 or K850 to roll off the line.
The real problem here is that SE has never really grown from that ancestry. They've not moved on. While once they had the technological edge in every field, including - in fact especially smartphones - now, without the greater might of Ericsson behind them, they're limping behind the likes of Nokia, let alone Apple. It wasn't always thus.
Perhaps Sony could help - but they never did in the past.

Look how well Nokia did with the N95.
SE can do the same. Might be to late now though.

Excellent post there Boinng! Basically sums up what's wrong with SE. They need to revisit Ericsson's philosophy and stop branding for the sake of branding. If it is branded Walkman then add the sound chip to be a real Walkman player. Same goes for the Cybershot, a decent camera module and optics would do nicely thank you.
One major problem for me is their rush to release incomplete products trying to keep up with the competition resulting in the horror stories about phones having stopped functioning or malfunctioning.
Ericsson was quick to let SE to their own devices, they should've guided them until they really were ready to stand on their own two feet. The results are there for all to see- confusion and incompetency reign supreme at SE.

@Boinng & EMS06
Great posts and really nothing left to say other than how i long for the good old Ericsson days like many others. Oh and nothing would make me happier than if Sony and Ericsson split and we could see some great Ericsson tech and innovation again. What would Sony have a couple of brand names and marketing and look where that's got them now. Oh well of course i can only dream of this actually happening mores the pity.

As far as I know, the stats at getjar is based on downloads from getjar. In other words, it only shows from what phones people download games and apps from getjar. JavaME developers use those stats to get an idea about what devices would be most profitable for their games to support.
So I don't think it can be used as a precise image of phone sales. |
