the particular ad that keeps on popping up isn't particularly pretty and i think it mars the look of the esato page...
I must admit that it is very naff and certainly not at all relevent. Laffen has said in the past that he might consider switching to the text only ads if the graphical ones start to become too distracting.
Hopefully whoever runs that ad will permanently run out of adword credits pretty soon anyway, they certainly couldn't afford to invest in a graphic designer to produce it by the looks of things

That particular ad was obviously so annoying that a new thread had to be started. I can prevent it from appearing again but need some help. The thing is that I do not have much control of the ads from Google AdSense in general. It is possible to block one and one advertiser, but I need to know the URL to the add. Could someone right-click on the advertising and copy the entire url and send it to me? Thanks

i s'pose my question is: is laffen happy to have this sort of ad popping up on his site?
Yes. I don't see the particular add and therefore don't have any problem with it.

I am not there yet.

Sh*t, here's an idea! We could always keep our big mouths shut and let all of those casual surfers click on the adverts thus giving laffen a bit of money to help keep Esato running, as is the point of google ads!

It's a flash banner so I can't get the exact target URL but it links to 'selectedwinner.co.uk'.
EDIT: Oooops, I was meant to PM it, done now

Presumably, Esato mobile uses a different script to produce the pages which doesn't include the google ads code.
Opera is probably filtering out the ad code before rendering the page if you're viewing the full HTML version.

@ laffen
yes, u do have control at google adsense. if u log on to your account... > adsense setup > competitive ad filter... and in the box u can add specific urls that you'd prefer not to see!

Yes. I don't see the particular add and therefore don't have any problem with it.
Am I the only person that finds this a very irresponsible answer? That's like George Brown saying "I'll scrap the dole, as I don't claim it"
And yes, I am only too aware that if i don't like something I can go elsewhere, but I'd like to think people would rather see the ad go than me.. (or maybe that's wishful thinking!)

Meow! Put those claws away ladies!
Getting back on topic, I think that the offending ad is thankfully no longer with us. Has anybody else seen it in the last 12 hours or so?

Maybe it was a little irresponsible. What I meant was: I do care if it is a scam ad but not if a few members think the ad at the bottom of the page are designed by a left-handed monkey.
Many of your favorite Internet web sites are up and running because of online advertising. In my opinion, it is one of the best way to pay for interesting content of all kind. Another way is to charge using subscription fees. That is not an option here. And I am sure the regulars are "suffering" of Banner/ad blindness anyway. |
