My apologies, just checked and both say "P990i" on mine as well. I must have remembered some other device, maybe my P900. Sorry, memory problems with age you know
P990i: A mistake, a curse and a disgrace So I lowered my expectations and settled for a P1i. I couldn't keep my expectations so low for a long time so now I have an HTC Touch HD

@michael the mage, now you have opened old wounds that I was willing to forget
When I first got my P990, I had thought that the packaging was rather lame. Three years ago my P900 had in the box, a cleaning cloth and a good quality carrying case. The P990 packaging had none of those and even the manual looked like it had been printed in a hurry on a desktop printer. One can logically conclude that the P990 was released in a hurry before the fw was ready. Probably SE management saw all the P990 devices in stock on their computer screens and wondered why they weren't being sold. But why didn't anyone tell them that there is a software component as well and they shouldn't be selling half products?
They sold us a car without a steering wheel and are now telling us to get their new model (sweet isn't it,double the profit!) or just do with the plastic steering wheel adapter they have provided...
It's not over yet, I'm not letting them off the hook that easily.

I have DPY 101 1472/77 R8B PL and I have nothing but problems with
mine The worst is that it stops receiving GSM network traffic and keeps
showing a full signal, so nobody can call me and I only get messages when
I reboot the phone. Thankfully, I know when it stops receiving (usually
within half an hour of starting up) because the keypad noise and power
button stop working at the same moment.

Here is my firmware (just updated):

Mine occaisionally locks up the way you're describing Gabriel, but the frequency is somewhat intermittent, and so it's hard to define a cause. I have noticed it's worse after running SEUS, but seems to improve after removing the battery for 10-15 minutes. I've also just put SMP's cleanup level up to 3, this seems to be helping but it's a little too early to tell.

@AD
Would you like to share your hw rev. and CDA/sw ver. with us? It would give us a more objective look at things

Hmm...this is getting more and more twisted. That's the exact same thing I have(or had rather) except that mine's WG2. I thought I had everything figured out. Don't you just hate not being on top of things? But at the moment I'll try to stay away from R8 for my replacement.

One advise I have for those having all kinds of 'phone hangs/is stuck, etc.' problems,
DO NOT REINSTALL or install Swiss Manager or SMPro !!! And go without this program for a while to see if all the current problems are still there or reappear.

When I had my first p990 with one of the first firmwares, SMP did indeed screw up my phone. Why and how I don't know. I only know that it did, by giving me a White Screen, Hanging during 'clean up in the background' and restarting when SMP closed programs.

Remember, this program takes an ACTIVE role in INTERFERRING with the phone's system!!!

So, if you have a faulty installation or a different version then SMP 151 or your hardware revision doesn't like SMP at all, then this can be one of the reasons you have a serious problem with your phone!

And really, since the last R9G/R6D update, if you just close a program via the built in Manager for a few days, then you don't miss SMP. BUT it can give an insight if that program is doing something not welcome by the phone

If not, then we move on to another step....

It's really difficult to make heads or tails out of this.
I have R8A and I am also running SMP 1.51 with level 3 reclaim. I haven't had any of the lock ups or restarts mentioned since R5. Before each update I format+master reset the P990 and restore only the unified inbox.
@GabrielG has R8B, so whatever the difference from R8A, I sure don't have any of those problems.

I'd like to keep this thread alive people, as I feel that between us we might be able to have have something of a breakthrough with regards to the conditions that cause the, at present, random seeming phone hangs. As I said mine tends to do it more often after using SEUS, to me this suggests that the system is made unstable by the manner of SEUS's access to the phone. I've also noticed a propensity for it to hang when it's been in the usb cradle for a long time.

This leads me to theorise that the problem lies either in the data port's subsystem or that it's somehow related to the power supply/charger. A possible issue with the power hardware was hinted at here:

http://www.esato.com/board/vi[....]ic=151483&start=30#post2051149

Is it therefore possible that SE had a bad batch of power output units? This would seem to explain why the problem isn't concistent across everyones' phones.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Sorry guys, just had another idea. Maybe the problem is as simple as this : that the battery isn't always properly seated, and so it occaisionally, and very fleetingly disconnects - not long enough to shut down the phone but long enough to crash the software. As a lighting technician, I've seen this kind of thing occur with certain types of equipment, where a simple swap out of the power supply fixes the problem. So possible solutions could be either a) a new battery or b) placing a piece of card between the back cover & the battery to ensure a solid connection, by pressig the battery firmly against the pins.

This was obviously a concideration of SE's during the design of the phone as they have placed a soft plastic pad inside the back cover of the phone - but what if this isn't quite good enough?

I only think of this as since the last time I pulled the battery in an attempt to break a cycle of it crashin twice a day, I've had my longest uptime ever: 1d 7h....and oh B@L&*%KS!! it's just crashed again!!

I'm now doing my experiment with the card, but have had to place it under the bottom edge of the battery, as the spring connection pins work vertically. I'll keep ypu informed

To some of you this may seem a bit silly, but if the lockups are caused by a dodgy power connection, you never know.......

Well, if it really is a power related issue maybe that explains why the
problem seems to happen more often when the phone is in the charging
cradle (for me anyway). It also sometimes simply turns off and doesn't
reboot. This has only happened when its connected to the charger.

Yep, that's happened to me too, a couple of times. I guess it's nice to know that it's not just my unit, as it implies some kind of quality control faliure on behalf of SE, and thus the outside chance of some recourse if the problem persists.

Uptime with my slip of card:5h 46minutes and counting....

If anyone's interested, I'm using very thin card - I in fact choppped up a buisiness card someone gave me the other day.

Ok, so it was worth a try......my phone had crashed again by the end of the day

So now I'm adopting a policy of only having it in the cradle when absolutely nescessary.

Hey ho....
