Now, iPhone is gonna be a winner simply because they know how to market their product very well.
The rumours about this iPhone has been going round for quite a very long time now. Pictures of various iPhones did emerge by then. This helped built the customer's anticipation to some level.
Also, we should take note of three elements that makes a phone successful:
Design,
Innovation and
Marketing.
Design - all will agree that iPhone's design is great - slim, sleek and shiny.
Innovation - well off course touch-screen and auto-rotation of screen.
Marketing - we've seen it - 'the best iPod ever', new features or upgrades announced closer to lunched date - added battery life etc.
Another thing has to do with customer's 'perceived-value'.
People see apple as a company with standard and uniqueness. A company that produces great products- taking the iPod for eg. People already perceive apple as the best. I mean most.
iPhon would likely be a strong competitor bcoz of it's popularity.
2007 gonna b interesting!

my 2cts.
customers market will be dominated with iphone for a while.
iphone 1.0 will be a huge succes, but due the lack of 3th party/java/flash customers will complain.
at the start of 08 apple promo face mr jobs will reveil a new range iphone's for the next year. including high and low end models
the business market will grow more toward htc.
palm might have a slim change using their linux os toward pda. with a huge range of applications might win back their lost market.

8 hours talktime,3.5 inch screen with optical quality glass,11.6mm thickness and WIFI. Not bad for a 1st attempt. Maybe they get it right next time.

iphone is like video call. Before video call is a reality, everyone went into frenzy that it is the future of the phone. Then people realised it is a pain-in-the-a** to make vid-call. Before long, people will realise the the only thing iphone is good for is to hold it in your hand or wear it around the neck in public. To make phone call/messaging you will silently and ashamedly reach into your pocket and pull out a nokia.
For once I find myself agreeing with you although only to an extent. I think the iPhone will be a success, but that's thanks to the hype. Once it is actually out I think there will be quite a few people who are disappointed with it because it doesn't live up to their expectations.

The winner is we, the consumer.

I agree. Newton, also an Apple product, was marketed like iPhone today but eventually it was flopped. |

As I said, I think the iPhone will be a success; the hype will see to that. However, it's how it does in the long term that interests me.

For those who were hoping it will be in Europe, chances are it won't be UNTIL A LONG TIME. The reason is that EVERY provider is refusing to have the iPhone because Apple is just wanting and expecting too much from the providers, such as pricing, redoing of their voicemail systems (for the 'visual' voicemail system on the iPhone), etc.
I just think Apple has one of the best designs and marketing in the world, which sells to consumers. That is exactly what happened with the iPod and what will I expect to happen with the iPhone.
If you ask me, iPhone just marketed the product in the way that some of us feel that they started the touchscreen innovation/market which is not true at all. The touchscreen market has been here for years and years, just not a big one. Another feature is the accelerometer, but again, a copy from the Sony Ericsson patent.
I have to say iPhone wouldn't be the best phone for business users. We can view PDF and Word documents but not edit them (as shown in the iPhone presentation). A lack of Flash is still a concern, because I think having Adobe Flash for an "excellent mobile internet experience" (so advertised by apple) is really important. |

The mp3 market didn't have the same intense competition when the iPod was first released as the mobile market does today. I don't think the iPhone will see the same sort of runaway success as the iPod did.

Sorry... iPhone wasn't supposed to be attached to that statement. No, iPhone will not win the touchscreen war in my opinion because it is JUST THE BEGINNING. |
