Apple has now started the War of the Touchscreen handsets with the iphone,  and others will obviously fight back with devices to match and even beat the iphone, so who do you think will win the battle?or will Apple conquer and rule the touchscreen phone market forever... Judgment Day is coming!!

yes i will get one of course, the temptation is far too great, what worries me whether i will get attached with it and not want to move onto a rival device?

well, as said in many of the recent iphone threads (and we have alot now)... who knows when we'll be able to get iphone here and its really not all that great a spec, just a new interface
but, I'm very tempted to try such an interface by getting the new HTC touch but I really feel initially its a bit of a gimmick, much as the 3D contacts were in the original V3 razr, though I fully expect it to mature as various manufacturers take up the challenge and it may well become a viable user interface

Silly question: Since apple are selling the phones at the own stores does that mean you can get it without a monthly plan?

No afraid not, AT&T have an exclusive deal with Apple so even in Apple stores they will be sold on contract only!

Anyway back on track, I personally think the whole complete touchscreen idea is just a good gimick, As i can't see it being a long term solution for mobile interfaces.
Yes OS X on on a phone is a great leap but i can't help but thinking that it sould have had a keypad and some nice normal, boring, bog standard buttons.

Although its very likely Vodafone will get it as they are currently negotiating with apple for exclusive rights!
