Yer the camera isn't really bad but condisering the mages from my Nokia 6630 with only 1.3 MP camera were of much higher quality, i am a little disappointed.

Nevermid EVERYTHING else beats the Nokia hands down.

I'm happy with my SE W810i :-}

@hairytea - mate, did you compare with your Nokia 6630 and W810i in the same pic resolution? i mean, its fair enough to compare it in Max resolution from W810i together with the Nokia 6630.

2.0 againts 1.3, man that's a quite distance there
i belive W810i can do way more better than a 1.3MP nokia

Of all the currently available SE phones, the W810i is probably just behind the W900 (which has the benefit of spot photometry) at the top of the quality table. In fact, SE are probably making the best cameraphones on the market today for overall quality (in all lighting conditions).

In low light, you'll always get noise. With such a small sensor and lens, it's pretty impossible to prevent and the solution is to use the LED lamp or get the proper Xenon flash. Or, get the K800 when it arrives (or the Walkman equivalent when announced).

The 6630 takes okay pictures, again in good light, but there's a lot of colour bleed from one pixel to another - and you'll notice a distinct lack of definition/detail. The N70 is better, while the N80 is better still - yet none of these cope well in low light. The N80 is terrible in low light, as there's the same blue streaking that you get on the K750/W800i and that's very hard to filter out afterwards.

Digital zoom is a waste of time.. it's just cropping the image and scaling up (something you could do more effectively afterwards). Optical zoom is currently reserved for the Sharp 903 and the Nokia N93 (the former having a disappointing camera, the latter being VERY good indeed).

I doubt firmware will make much difference, and as far as I can see here, there has been no update for the W810i yet anyway (well, not mine R4CE012) and so it could just be a faulty sensor/autofocus mechanism. As with anything mechanical, it's possible that it is just broken and will result in all images being slightly out of focus.

indeed, i also noticed, that the pix made by 6680 arent that much different from k750i cam for example. so, we have 2 options: sE cams are crap or nokia cams are very good, the decision is up to u...

Both are very good in my opinion, but for low-light use the W810, K800 and W900 all perform better than anything else on the market today. If the lighting conditions are good, the N80 is quite amazing (and look every bit as good when viewed on the hi-res screen).

I haven't tried the N73 or N93 in low light yet, but the N93 took some impressive images in bright, natural, light - as posted on our own forum a few weeks ago.

Where things stand, it's pretty hard to be a Nokia or Sony-Ericsson fan-boy. Both companies are working very hard, although in my personal opinion I think SE are leading the way, with Nokia playing catch-up. That's quite an amazing turnaround, but Nokia definitely misjudged both the imaging and music markets - giving SE a long lead. And, Sony may not have that much involvement in the handset design, software or marketing, but they have given a lot of expertise on both imaging and music. Nokia doesn't have that heritage to fall back on.

(This could well turn into a rather long rant.. so I'll shut up now!)

OK I have a photo i have taken outdoors below (the one of my motorbike), just this second took this picture in BRIGHT sunlight, very nice day today but the picture makes it look a little bit overcast. It certainly does not show the true light outside

Off the beaten track here but had to mention how much i love the way in which the W810i lets you take 3 photo's and stitch them together as one panoramic picture....here is my first attempt:-

Dude, is that your naked girl friend on the couch? it seems she is showing her behind she has long legs i can see.

I think anyone that says w810/w800/k750 camera suck, just doesn´t know how to take photos...

Saying 6630 or even 6680 takes better photos is even worse...its RIDICULOUS

It is quite amusing, as the 6630/6680 camera wasn't even that good for 1.3. In fact, one of the only decent 1.3 megapixel cameras was the S700 - also a Sony Ericsson!

I was waiting for someone to mention that! I thought it was my eyes and that i was just looking at the picture wrong!

...anyways- seems strange that your fones pics are coming out like that. Though i think your outdoor pic looks perfectly fine, maybe its just autofocus and objects close-up you've got probs wit
