SE is probably making these early announcements to make the consumers think twice before buying other brands. It's like they're saying "Just wait a little while and we'll be selling this model soon". We can see how they are trying to cover all market segments this year.

I also agree, the P990 has been taking so long to release. There's a lot of new stuff involved in this one so I think SE is still trying to make it as bug-free as possible. I hope they change it to 3MP camera as a bonus for those who waited
resistance is futile.

sometimes people get fed up of waiting & go ahead & buy another phone from a different manufacturer. which means 1 less se phone sold & 1 more for the competitor.

Agreed. By the time the P990 is released, it's specs will probably not look so great anymore. Let's say it's released in September, 2mp will not look so great anymore now will it.

@shaliron, true. take a look at the o2 atom, it has 90% of the p990's features & is already a sell out at a little less than $ 1k u.s. most of the atom owners are impatient potential p990 buyers who are fed up of waiting.

I switched from exactly because I was tired of waiting endlessly for the P990 to come out. I had my K750i but then, for business reasons, I needed something more "PDA-like". The current P series was too old for me (no Wi-Fi just to name something) and nothing was on the horizon.

Somebody here wrote that the P990 is taking long because there is a lot to be checked before the release. This might have been true last year, but this year several manufacturers released phones with pretty much the same specs as the P990... The tech is therefore widely available. If Sony always wants to do things "in house" that's another problem!

I have an "Orange" branded version (SPV M5000) of the Qtek 9000 and, although heavy and not as stylish as some phones it works like a breeze (Windows Mobile 5.0 surprised me in this regard).
Is the phone perfect? NO!
Is it "cool"?NO!
IS IT ON THE MARKET? YEEEES!!!!!!

I want the n80 that has every feature that the p990i has except uiq which i dont like so much plus a 3mega pixel cam.Nokia always released their phones at the right time except the n91 which is taking soon time now to come out.If SE wants to win nokia in selling of smartphones,Nokia has plenty comin out this year.

yes but the phones with 3.2MB are dedicated camera phones with very few of the features you'd expect in a smartphone like the P990. The P990 isn't a "camera phone" so it's not so critical that it compete with the latest MP available. The P990 will have more than enough appeal with a 2MP camera for most business/smartphone users.

several years ago, SE would produce a new cellphone long after the previous one, but now they're producing so many models one after the other.. just like what nokia is doing.. i hope doing so doesn't mean the quality would have to suffer.. but so far, i am happy with their new models! but they're becoming like nokia that the other model would differ so little in specifications with the other.. hmmmm..

seems to adapt nokia's marketing strategy by releasing lots of phones, but i think has the edge because they an update service to boot...

Most phones are due in Q2, so I bet we'll see a few complaints when a load of them arrive within a few weeks of each other! ("Too many phones to choose from; what do I buy?").

The N80 does look cool, but the 6280 camera is crap and the N70 isn't amazing. Do I have faith in the 3 megapixel sensor on the N80? Well, it's a case of wait and see - but the pictures I got on the K800 were amazing and so it doesn't necessarily matter either way.

The W950i in Q3 is the biggest disappointment. I think it will be looking rather dated by then, assuming we see loads of new music devices announced at CeBIT and Apple/Creative/Samsung etc launch new flash based players at low cost in the future. That said, it will still be good in its own right.

I agree. One thing that I think is a bit of a turn-off with the new 3.2MP cam-phones is that SE didn't improve the video recording capabilities. The P990 can take QVGA video at 30fps. Besides 2MP is quite enough for a decent picture.
resistance is futile.
