I have the exact same problem and I got it last January as well. Last year, I put it down to taking malaria tablets (because I had just come back from Dominican Republic and had to continue taking them for 2 weeks after I came back), but I've got it again this year and so has my boyfriend (joebmc). I think it is down to the time of year. January is the most depressing month ever. When I'm trying to get to sleep, I have absolutely nothing on my mind other than trying to get to sleep. It is this paranoia that keeps me awake! Last year, this insomnia thing only lasted a few weeks, but it was pure hell. Some nights, I'd go to bed at 10.30pm and not get to sleep until 5am (and I didn't even drift off once in that time!!!). Then I have to get up at 8am, it was awful so I bought some sleeping pills (Nytol) and they worked, but not every time. Best advice is to have some form of alcohol before you go to bed. It relaxes the mind and makes your tired. That would be my advice. It's the only thing that has consistently worked for me but hopefully I won't turn into an alcoholic (although I'd prefer that over insomnia)! Also, try and relax for at least 30 mins before you go to sleep because if you are on the go, then try and go straight to sleep, it probably won't work. I've tried the exercise thing, but it doesn't work for me.

@ xpinkladyx - thanks for the advice, but alcohol doesnt work either not sure why, but it has a minimal effect (unless I drink alot)

@ eastcoaster - i have nothing on my mind im just bored lying in bed, I am normally doing something and I don't like going to bed, but I hate waking up lol. I do have exams this week, but I can't say im stressed as I don't really care about them. Business has been ok not brilliant, and my relationships with friends seem to be fine along with the missus. I havent got much to look foward to so its not excitment, only thing really is that recently ive had alot of things which are at the back of my mind (will my small business do well this month, will i get into the right uni, will I be happy there, am I going to have any customer complaints, do I have any emails, will I go into debt in uni, will I continue with business there). I do feel when I go out should I leave my pc on so when I get back I can check my inbox which I know is nuts as it makes no difference if I reply to a email same day or within a few min.
ALso next year when I go to uni my parents are moving to spain (mostlikeely about 3 months after I go or less) prehaps im feeling that I don't belong here that im just waiting to move out to uni. My house drives me nuts to I moved here like 3 years ago and we still have the same paint on the walls and same carpet on the floors (it was a new house and has all this beige) it drives me nuts as it doent seem personel at all, and although it is a family house, there are no photos ony a few posessions lying around downstairs, and whats mine is up here in my room.....

man I can rant about s**t

to me, it sounds like you are a little nervious/scared about going away to the uni. i know at the same time, you are exited, and want to leave your house and all, but you seem like you are worried about how u will like it, debt etc, and its so far away (not far, but more than 10 days, ya know?) so its on your mind, and knowing u cant do anything about it, keeps you up thinking about it. It may not be the primary thing on your mind, but its running around in the back of your head trying to figure out things and figure out how to make things right when you leave for the uni. Then possiably how your small business will do in a new location, and wonder who will enjoy what your business does. Then the meeting new peopel at the uni is probobly back there also. I think you just need to take some time and write some things down. try to figure it out in the day time when (and if) you have some free time. just write down what you think you can do to make things work for the best, and what you want things to be like, so you can figure out the best way you think things will be.

also, is your girlfriend moving with you?

i find that the thing that makes me not get to sleep is being paranoid that I won't fall asleep. With this running through my mind, I just can't nod off. I'm also finding that I get really hot, even though I wouldn't usually. I'm fine at weekends so that's why I know this is a paranoia thing. You should try and get some sleeping pills. They really aren't anything serious. You just take them 20 mins before you go to sleep and they should help you to feel sleepy, although they don't always work for me. I also find that the telly sometimes makes me doze off. but again, this doesn't always work and doesn't work at all for some people. Whenever me and my b/f watch a film in bed together, you can almost guarantee I'll fall asleep, but he won't! This obviously happens when I'm not going through one of my insomnia phases.

I'm sure that you will soon get out of this, because I did before. I certainly can't take a life time of not being able to sleep! But definitely get some sleeping pills.

Or if you don't want to take sleeping pills, take Kalms, or Nytol do herbal tablets which are supposed to help you relax.

nope my girlfriend is going to a diff uni about 2 hours away or more, but that doesnt bother me for some reason. I think you are right about the whole moving away from uni thing scares me as I am looking foward to it, but there are so many things to think about and it is eating me, but I can blank alot outa in my mind. I think I may try the whole writing my thoughts down on the matter, your right it may help, as im thinking alot about how my business will go (young and determined) as its a huge part of my life and also a real hobby of mine and I also think its one of my worst problems as I think about it far to much, for instance I just bought this for fun

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay[....]pagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&rd=1

I probally wont be able to fix them, but Im 100% sure il make money on them, but I didnt buy it for the money I could make, I bought it as im bored and have nothing better to waste my money on what is the point of that?, I have got to a stage where I can make enough money to buy what I want and now I have almost everything I want (thought admitidly the new macbook is on my to buy list)

wow. good luck fixing those
but im sure that writing your thoughts down like i said will help some. and like i said, it may not be the main thing on your mind, but its running around back there somewhere. the other thoughts are just your mind trying to cover up your other thoughts, so its like your mind trying to trick itsself into not thinking about it, you know?

the sleeping pills idea... my opinion on that is to stay away from it. there is something that is causing you to not be able to sleep. weather it be one thing or another, its still something making you not sleep, and you should try to figure it out rather than take sleeping pills, which in sence could make it worse becuase you wouldnt figure out whats bugging you, which could make you think more in the daytime which could make you more drowsey when you shouldnt be, while you have work to be done.
do you get what i mean?

also, if you dont mind me asking, whats your little business?

now I'm finding I'm waking up at stupidly early hours, and I'm still going to bed at 2-3am. I just can't seem to sleep-in even if I try!

The only time I can sleep well is in the middle of the day Just as well i set my own hours (I work my own small computer repair business - no retail outlet - all my work is onsite, but I can set the hours)

Nothing like a mid day siesta to get you through the day!

@max. Correct. Not a deep one but a nap of half an hour in day time recharges the body to keep busy for hours together. . . . . . . . . Well. Telling that, the thought itself that my sleeping hours has gone down, may spoil it itself.
